Wednesday horse racing tips

  • MARKET RASEN
    3.15: Ryan’s Rocket 11/10 (1pt)
  • KEMPTON
    5.30: White Crown Star 4/5 (1.5pts)
    7.00: Mount Athos 7/2 (1pt) & Heathcliff – Swinger (1pt)

Ryan’s Rocket

Ostend has some interesting yet odd form as the gelding has placed well a fair distance (11 lengths) behind Jagwar at Bangor in November.

He was a distant third behind Casa No Mento last time out on heavy ground but was also carrying 7lb more than the winner despite being rated 17lb lower.

Ostend started off over fences rated 7lb higher and now comes down to a dangerous weight but comes into this facing two tough opponents.

Ryan’s Rocket was further behind Jagwar at Cheltenham in January.

But he has strong form coming into this especially as Jagwar has continually improved with each run this season.

Trainer Fergal O’Brien and jockey Jonathan Burke have strike rates of 33% and 38% respectively.

Issar d’Airy also has solid form but consistent second places since winning in January 2024 raises concerns about backing him again.

The higher priced horses are not quite consistent enough to back but Ryan’s Rocket ticks a lot of boxes and is now out to odds against for a much better price.

White Crown Star

Promising Sea The Stars colt who can get off the mark at the fourth time of asking having run just the once on the all-weather before.

Was 4/1 for his last start when finishing fifth and trainer Andrew Balding clearly saw this colt has been performing below his potential as he went off for a wind op the next month.

Went well at 25/1 at Yarmouth finishing a close third and drops back down to 7f here which should is another tick against his name for finding a winner.

Oisin Murphy is now on board which is even more promising.

Fearnot has been tipped a lot as the slightly better value at around 5/4 as he won on debut quite nicely, but a 7lb penalty to me looks a tough one to overcome.

He’s been backed a lot more for the nature of the win though as he dwelt at the start of the race and had to make up ground from the offset.

But that seemed to suit as he plugged on gamely to overtake his rivals. However, it’s difficult to know at this stage how good that form translates to here as those rivals are also lightly raced.

Mount Athos

A lot of these runners have incredible form over this course and distance and the majority of those dominate the front of the market.

Heathcliff is 3-3 when running here over 7f and has placed very close to the winner when challenging at 6f.

Roi De France if anything is dangerously unexposed with just a few runs in 2024 to suggest he’s in for a very successful flat career.

The colt placed behind Poker Face here over 1m and is yet to try 7f, so he becomes very interesting on the slight drop.

However, in this kind of a field distance form may prevail and Heathcliff has that in abundance but probably appeals more as a place bet.

Nikovo is a massive price considering he won on his first start over 7f earlier this month.

Has yet to run at Kempton but that’s rarely a negative but what is, is the fact this a much stronger race and may be caught out by that sharp uptake in rivals ratings.

Mount Athos has won this race twice already and gets the right conditions to strike again under a jockey who gets a strong performance out of him every time.
