Xander Schauffele will look to defend his crown at the 2025 PGA Championship later this spring.

The American claimed the second major of the year in 2024 with a sublime performance at Valhalla Golf Club.

However, his victory was somewhat overshadowed by the news of Scottie Scheffler being arrested and charged with assaulting a police office.

The reigning Masters champion found himself in the back of a police car outside Valhalla and taken to a station but all charges were later dropped.

Meanwhile, on the course, Schauffele established an early lead with a stunning opening round of 62.

He then let his rivals back in over the next two days before recovering brilliantly and seeing off a late challenge by Bryson DeChambeau to claim the win with a score of 21-under-par.

Schauffele, Scheffler and DeChambeau will be among the main contenders again while Rory McIlroy will also likely be in contention after a stunning start to 2025 from the Northern Irishman.

He’s claimed victory in The Players Championship and AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am already this year and is a two-time PGA Championship winner.

PGA Championship 2025: Field and tee times

The PGA Championship is contested by a maximum field of 156 players.

There is then a cut after round two, which reduces the numbers to around half.

The full field will be confirmed in due course, but all of the world’s best will be competing, bar any injuries.

This is likely to include several LIV Golf competitors as well, including DeChambeau and Jon Rahm.

The PGA Championship differs from the other four majors in the fact that no amateur players compete and instead, the tournament includes 20 PGA Professionals.

The full field, tee times and groupings will be available here when they are announced.

PGA Championship 2025: The Course

The main course at Quail Hollow Club measures 7,600 yards and is a par 71.

This will be the second time the venue has hosted the PGA Championship, having also done so in 2017 when Justin Thomas claimed glory.

It is mainly known for hosting the Wells Fargo Championship every year, and it has done so since 2003.

It is famed for ‘The Green Mile’, which consists of holes 16, 17 and 18.

This is widely considered to be one of the most difficult stretches in golf after hole 16 was modified and moved to the edge of a lake.

At 17, there is a pond that makes landing the ball on the green extremely tricky while 18 is known to be one of the toughest endings in golf.

PGA Championship 2025: What has been said?

Schauffele won his first major title at Valhalla last May before going on to clinch Open glory at Troon later in the summer.

Following his win at the PGA Championship, he said: “It’s been a while since I’ve won and I kept saying all week I needed to stay in my lane. Man was it hard to do that today.

“I tried all day to keep focussed on what I needed to do and keep every hole ahead of me.

“I think I would have been a bit less patient if that putt had not have gone in. I really did not want to go into a play-off against Bryson.

“I told myself ‘this was my opportunity, just capture it’.

“My mum is in San Diego and my dad is in Hawaii and I managed to call him but I had to hang up quickly because he was making me cry. He was on the phone bawling. It means so much.

“I am very satisfied. I’m tired. Once I sat down in scoring, I felt a little bit more tired. But just a whirlwind of emotions. I knew I had to birdie the last hole, looking up at the board.

“I was trying to squeak a birdie in there somehow just to have some kind of cushion. It was a hectic birdie, as well, but it was awesome. I kept telling myself, I need to earn this, I need to prove this to myself, and this is my time.

“I stayed very patient. I was looking up at the board. There’s been times where I tried to look away from it until the back nine, but today I was looking at it. I just wanted to be aware of everything. I wanted to know exactly where I stood. I wanted to know and address my feelings when they were happening.”
