The Grade 1s keep on coming at Aintree on Friday and we have some top class action again.
Jonbon is looking to put that Cheltenham blip behind him and defend his Melling Chase crown and Supreme third Romeo Coolio is looking to get Elliott out the doldrums and confirm form over Salvator Mundi and co.
Caldwell Potter is back with the big boys after impressing at Cheltenham but Handstands will have something to say about that having defeated subsequent Arkle winner Jango Baie at Sandown when last seen. This Festival continues to deliver!
I have analysed all 7 races in detail on Day 2 and hopefully we can add to those winners from yesterday and continue to make it a profitable 3 days.

Melling Chase tips
I took JONBON on at Cheltenham last month as I just didn’t think he acted as well around there as he does elsewhere. He made a bad mistake and actually did well to come through late for second. This track is much more to his liking and he obviously justified strong support to win this last year. He only has the three rivals to beat and if his jumping holds up he is definitely the most likely winner as the betting is suggesting. He handles quicker ground perfectly fine and is hard to pick holes in.
El Fabiolo has clashed with Jonbon a few times in the past going down a neck over hurdles here three years ago. He thrashed him in the Arkle but then struggled beaten four lengths at Sandown last year. He fell at the Dublin Racing Festival on return and then was turned over at cramped odds at Navan last time. He could still be a danger but he has a lot to prove most notably in the jumping department. If he does get round I still think Jonbon will have his measure and the fact he is second favourite tells you about the lack of strength in this year’s renewal.

Topham Chase tips
I always love watching the Topham as we get to see them over the Grand National fences for the first time. This race has been a bit of a lottery in recent years with some big prices going in. As you can see from the trends there has been no winning favourites in the past 11 years which looks quite significant. I’ve decided to take a chance on one at a huge price in the shape of GRANDEUR D’AME for Alan King. This horse is certainly capable on a going day and he showed that being agonisingly denied at Cheltenham on Trials Day. He wasn’t disgraced finishing midfield in the Ultima and if he takes to these fences he could run much better than his price suggests.
Plenty in with chances in a race of this nature and of those towards the top of the market Bad does catch the eye. Things have really clicked for him the last twice winning impressively at Kempton and then following up gamely at that venue again last time. He isn’t the biggest horse but if he takes to this discipline he could have a chance. The Goffer was a good fourth behind Stumptown in the Cross Country last month and is another one I can see getting competitive.

Mildmay Novices’ Chase tips
I like the way Ben Pauling has campaigned HANDSTANDS and coming here fresh having skipped Cheltenham could be the difference. After falling on chase debut at Wincanton he hasn’t put a foot wrong winning his last 3 starts. He beat subsequent Arkle hero Jango Baie at Sandown when last seen and showed a great attitude to prevail on that occasion. He is obviously still unexposed so could easily improve a fair bit more yet and this looks a good chance to bag his second Grade 1 over fences.
Caldwell Potter jumped them silly at Cheltenham and won impressively. He seems to be coming to the boil now so could emerge as the biggest danger. There is plenty of pace on though so he won’t get an easy lead in this sort of company. Dancing City disappointed at Cheltenham last month and needs softer ground for his stamina to come into play. Stellar Story is pretty consistent and shouldn’t be entirely ignored either.

Top Novices’ Hurdle tips
I thought that was a big run from ROMEO COOLIO in defeat in the Supreme. The front pair Kopek Des Bordes and William Munny pulled clear but he was nicely away from the fourth and the field was well strung out in behind. The time of the race was decent and I think it’ll work out. He is open to further improvement and should be able to confirm that form with Salvator Mundi. The latter needs to settle better and they could easily finish the 1-2 here as I do think they are a little bit above Tripoli Flyer.
The latter is going the right way and skipped Cheltenham but still has enough to find. Diva Luna ran a big race to finish third at the Cheltenham Festival and is another one capable of running a good race. The rest do look up against it so if the selection comes forward from that Cheltenham run he should get the job done for Gordon Elliott.

Sefton Novices’ Hurdle tips
This has been won by some smart horses down the years including the likes of Thistlecrack, Champ and more recently last year Dancing City. MISTER MEGGIT has the potential to be a really exciting horse and he showed that in some regard winning on the bridle at this track when last seen back in November. I know he has had his issues but I can see him improving again for the step up beyond 3 miles for the first time and I want to keep him on side.
Califet En Vol also looks to be going the right way having bumped into The New Lion at Newbury and then showing a good attitude to prevail at Huntingdon. He could easily be the biggest danger to the selection. At a bigger price Moon Rocket is likeable and should also be suited by this sort of test so must enter calculations as well.

William Hill Handicap Hurdle tips
I backed WRECKLESS ERIC at Sandown last month and I thought he was desperately unlucky not to win that. He encountered traffic problems on more than one occasion and really hit the line full of running. He was beaten half a length but I’d mark that up considerably. His overall profile is really encouraging and just 3lb higher here with the promise of more to come especially up to 2 and a half miles now he looks worth chancing. I’m pleasantly surprised to see him at a double-figure price as I’d have him shorter.
Impose Toi still has potential to do better and was an eye-catching second to Jimmy Du Seuil in the Coral Cup last month. If this doesn’t come too soon he will be a danger to all. Wade Out impressed at Wetherby but he was entitled to do that and I see him more of a chaser in the future than sharp enough to win a race as competitive as this.

Hallgarten And Novum Wines Handicap Hurdle tips
I’ve had the feeling for a while that CELTIC DINO has a big pot in him. He won his first two starts over hurdles before finishing fourth behind Potters Charm at this venue on Boxing Day. He again shaped quite well in defeat behind Tripoli Flyer at Kempton in the Dovecote when last seen. He goes handicapping for the first time now and could be off a lenient mark with Dylan Johnston taking a handy 3lb off his back as well. This big field scenario will suit and if he settles and gets usual luck in-running I think he’ll go close.
22 horses heading to post so clearly plenty of dangers. Hamsiyann still has unfinished business and his trainer has probably had this in mind after he landed that gamble at Cheltenham at the November meeting. He never got competitive at Musselburgh but I’d forgive him that so he should go well. Diamonds For Luck is thriving having won his last 3 so is another one I expect to get involved at the business end.
