The Grand National takes centre stage domestically on Saturday but there’s also a cracking card packed with Group action at Meydan.
Dubai World Cup night is the climax of the UAE season and as one would expect there is no shortage of top-class international horses bidding to take some prize money home.
We have selections for three of the races on the card including a couple of British raiders that look capable of outrunning their odds.

Dubai World Cup night tips
- 1.10 Meydan – Trawlerman
- 2.20 Meydan – Regional
- 5.30 Meydan – Forever Young
1.10 Meydan – 2m Race 2 – Dubai Gold Cup Sponsored By Al Tayer Motors (Group 2) (Turf) (4yo+)
The thoroughbred action kicks off with a staying race for the turf horses and this year’s renewal looks like a cracker.
The one that makes most appeal is Trawlerman for John & Thady Gosden. This son of Golden Horn is proven at Group 1 level and, while he’s been beaten in the last two renewals of this contest, he sets a solid standard for his rivals to aim at this time around.
His form behind Kyprios since last year’s third in this contest is unrivalled and he showed that he has no problem handling a sound surface when beaten a length by that rival on good to firm in the Ascot Gold Cup last season.
He had excuses last year and did well to finish as close as he did from the widest draw so he looks worth giving another chance to with William Buick on board, a jockey that rides this circuit particularly well.
It’s a slight surprise that Trawlerman isn’t the outright favourite for this contest at the time of writing and, at his current sort of price he can be considered an each-way bet if he’s bigger than 5-1.
2.20 Meydan – 6f Race 4 – Al Quoz Sprint Sponsored By Azizi Developments (Group 1) (Turf) (3yo+)
Regional was pretty unlucky not to get his head in front last season and he looks capable of outrunning his odds in the Al Quoz Sprint.
He was only just touched off late in last season’s reappearance at the Curragh and chased home the Aussie star Asfoora subsequently.
He gives the impression that a flat, fast six furlongs will be a major benefit to him here and this looks like a below par Group 1 this time around.
5.30 Meydan – 1m2f Race 9 – Dubai World Cup Sponsored By Emirates Airline (Group 1) (Dirt) (3yo+)
Provided that Forever Young doesn’t feel the effects of a hard race in the Saudi Cup, he’s expected to be hard to beat in the feature Dubai Gold Cup.
He pulled miles clear with Romantic Warrior in that Group 1 contest and that rival is a bona fide Group 1 performer in his native Hong Kong.
He sets a massive standard on form and he’ll need to underperform if his rivals are going to get near him this time.
