Manchester City head into Sunday afternoon’s Manchester derby having won lost just one of their last six matches in all competitions, following back to back wins over Bournemouth in their FA Cup quarter final and Leicester in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

The 2-0 win over Leicester keeps Pep Guardiola’s four-time defending Premier League champions in fifth place in the table, just a point shy of Chelsea in fourth but only a point ahead of Newcastle, who have also played a game fewer, who lead the fifth and final Champions League spot’s chasing pack.

The Citizens have won only one of their last three games in the league though, in what has been a poor season by the club’s lofty standards, leaving the prospect of them not qualifying for next season’s Champions League a very real one.

Manchester United have also desperately underachieved this season, heading into the weekend way down in 13th place in the Premier League table, seven points off the top half with only eight matches of the season remaining.

Ruben Amorim’s side’s four match unbeaten run came to an end at the City Ground on Tuesday night with a 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest to leave them with two wins from their last six outings.

The Red Devils are unbeaten in their last five games at Old Trafford in 90 minutes, but the club’s main priority this season now lies in the Europa League, their last chance at silverware this season and effectively their last chance of playing in Europe next year, with the first leg of their quarter final clash with Lyon taking place next Thursday.

Manchester United have won two of the last three Manchester derbies but City have won on three of their last four visits to Old Trafford, and have lost only once at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ since Covid, though Amorim has won his last two managerial meetings against Guardiola.
