The Champions League quarter finals get underway tonight with four of Europe’s heaviest hitters coming to blows in the opening round of first leg ties.

In London, Arsenal have reached the last eight of Europe’s premier club competition for the second season in succession after having not reached this stage in 14 years prior.

Mikel Areta’s side sit second in the Premier League and are seemingly out of the title race, leaving them free to go hell for the leather in Europe as the Gunners seek to be crowned champions of Europe for the first time in the club’s history.

Standing in their way are a Real Madrid side who lifted their record extending 15th Champions League trophy at Wembley last year, and a side who have won the the competition in six of the last 11 years.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side, like their opponents tonight, sit second in La Liga behind El Clasico rivals Barcelona, but already have two trophies under their belt this season having won the Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup.

Over in Germany, the Bundesliga leaders take on the Serie A leaders as Bayern Munich welcome Inter Milan to the Allianz Arena.

Vincent Kompany’s side have a six point lead at the top of the league table as they look to win the title back from Bayer Leverkusen, who made history last season with their unbeaten domestic season.

The six-time European champions are looking to join AC Milan in joint second on the all time list of Champions League trophies, spurred on by the prospect of playing their final at home at the end of next month.

Defending Italian champions Inter Milan hold a three-point lead at the top of Serie A as they turn their focus on lifting their first Champions League trophy in 15 years.
