The Masters 2025 golf betting preview

We always hope, maybe even expect, that the Masters will deliver on drama and excitement.

But, in truth, we’re due a ding-dong battle on the back nine on Sunday.

Since Tiger Woods overwhelmed Francesco Molinari (and injury) to win in 2019 there have been three winners whose significant 54-hole leads were never really dented and, in the last two years, Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler won by four shots.

Let’s hope again, then.

Many will also hope that Rory McIlroy can throw off the frustration of throwing away last year’s US Open and finally complete the career Grand Slam.

He’s not the only one with doubts, however. Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele are out of form, while Jon Rahm and Collin Morikawa have stopped winning as often as they did.

McIlroy must beware the Swedish phenom Ludvig Aberg who was second on debut last year and also Bryson DeChambeau who was last year’s first round leader.

An Amen Corner battle between that trio would be the ideal Sunday proposition.

But are they the best bets? Let’s find out.

Rory McIlroy to Win

He couldn’t, could he?

In 2011 he led by four with 18 holes to play, found a wooden cabin from the 10th tee, and carded an 80.

In 2018 he played the final round in the final group but couldn’t impose himself on the eventual winner Patrick Reed.

In 2022 he carded a sensational final round 64 from off the pace to claim second.

So he can play the course.

And he’s in form. He closed 2024 with a victory in the DP World Tour Championship and he arrives at Augusta with, for the first time in his career, two wins for the year.

But can he overcome the 11-year major championship drought?

He can, and to do so would set him up for a potentially blockbusting season with the PGA Championship on his favourite course and the Open on home soil at Royal Portrush.

Shane Lowry Each Way

Irishman Shane Lowry ranked first for Approaches in last year’s Masters but he could find nothing on the greens.

In the two years before he had ended six of eight rounds at Augusta National inside the top 10, including a third place finish in 2022. 

That’s some course form and, in all, he has four top-25 finishes at Augusta in his last five starts and 16 top-25s in his last 24 major appearances.

Throw in five top-20s in his last six starts and he makes a fine package.

Patrick Reed Top 20

The 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed is in superb form right now.

At the back end of 2024, he carded a 59 on his way to victory in the Hong Kong Open and he has finished top-10 in three of his last four starts including seventh last week in Miami.

Given that form, his Augusta National record has to be considered.

Since and including his triumph in 2018 he has recorded five top-20s in seven starts.

He’s primed for another good week and is priced 21/10 for yet another top-20 with Betfred.

Justin Rose First Round Leader Each Way

Unlike the other three majors the Masters, of course, takes place on the same course every year and, what’s more, the pin positions are very consistent.

So when a player has a fondness for a particular round we need to take note.

In 19 visits, Englishman Justin Rose has been the first round solo leader twice, he’s twice shared the lead and he’s been top six after 18 holes on another four occasions.

He’s a veteran these days but he still loves the majors (he was second in the Open last summer) and he can get off to another flier.
