Paris Saint-Germain stunned Liverpool in the previous round of the Champions League and they now have another English team in their sights. The Parisians are daring to dream that they could go all the way.

Aston Villa are no pushovers, though, and their supporters have been counting down the days until this match since beating Club Brugge in the last 16. Who will triumph in France?

PSG vs Aston Villa predictions

Aston Villa supporters are in dreamland right now. It was not that long ago that Villa were toiling in the Championship. Now they are one aggregate victory away from a place in the Champions League semi-finals.

What a journey this club is on. Just two and a half years have passed since Unai Emery was appointed as Steven Gerrard’s successor at Villa Park. Because of how comprehensively Emery has transformed Villa’s fortunes, it feels like he has been in charge for much longer.

There are only a few more weeks of the 2024/25 campaign but Villa are still fighting on three fronts. A 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest on Saturday boosted their hopes of a top-five finish and Champions League qualification.

At the end of this month Emery’s side face Crystal Palace in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, with either Forest or Manchester City awaiting in the final.

Then there is Europe. Villa fans have long been proud of their heritage in this competition – and rightly so. They are one of only six English sides to have been crowned kings of the continent, having lifted the famous trophy back in 1982.

Villa defended their crown the following year, but this is their first season back in the Champions League since then. Emery’s men have not simply made up the numbers. A top-eight finish in the league phase allowed them to bypass the play-offs, going straight through to the round of 16.

The draw was kind, pairing Villa with Club Brugge, but you can only beat what is in front of you and Emery’s team did that with aplomb, triumphing 6-1 on aggregate.

Needless to say, a bigger test awaits in the quarters. Paris Saint-Germain were much the better team against Liverpool over two legs last time out.

They might have advanced thanks to a penalty shoot-out, but anyone who watched either game knows how accomplished Luis Enrique’s team are.

Yet the pressure is on the Parisians. They have been regulars in the knockout phase of the tournament over the last decade. When PSG reached the final in 2020, Villa only narrowly avoided relegation.

“They are favorites but we are going to try to prepare as best as possible to compete against a very good team, very good players and a very good coach,” Emery said at the weekend.

Aston Villa are underdogs for this clash with PSG, but they will be aiming to stay in the tie ahead of the second leg.

PSG to win by one goal

This was supposed to be a transitional season for PSG following the departure of Kylian Mbappe last summer. Instead, the team looks more balanced and cohesive than it has done for years.

PSG wrapped up the Ligue 1 title at the weekend, allowing them to dedicate their full attention to the Champions League.

Luis Enrique’s side were inconsistent in the first half of the campaign, but they have really got it together of late. PSG have won 14 of their last 15 outings in all competitions, the exception being an incredibly unlucky 1-0 loss to Liverpool in the first leg of the last 16.

Aston Villa are generally stronger at home than away, but they have actually won each of their last four matches at opposition grounds.

This one should be close, but PSG have enough to take a narrow lead to Birmingham.

Both teams to score

With the stakes so high, neither manager will want to risk this being an end-to-end, frenzied affair.

Having said that, both teams do their best work when the tempo is high, so this promises to be an entertaining encounter.

PSG will aim to start quickly and pin Aston Villa back in their own half. Emery’s team like to push up the pitch, but PSG have the speed to exploit their high line provided their runs in behind are timed well.

At the same time, we can see Villa finding the back of the net. After all, they have not drawn a blank in any of their last 12 games.

Ousmane Dembele to score any time

Previously a talented but erratic forward, Ousmane Dembele has suddenly become a reliable goalscorer this season.

The France international has made the net bulge 28 times for PSG in Ligue 1 and the Champions League.

Dembele only featured for 27 minutes against Angers at the weekend, so he should be reasonably fresh for this match.

As mentioned above, Villa’s high defensive line is a risky strategy and Dembele could be the one to take advantage of any mistiming on the away team’s part.
