Carlos Sainz has risked further punishment from the FIA after his costly upset stomach in Japan.

The Spaniard was slapped with a €10,000 (£8,500) fine for arriving late to the pre-race national anthem last weekend.

Sainz could now fall foul of the strict new guidelines on swearing, which the FIA announced in January.

Drivers face race bans for repeated swearing or criticising the sport’s governing body.

A first offence comes with a £33,800 fine, with a one-month suspension and championship points deduction looming for three offences.

And in his pre-race press conference, Sainz launched into an X-rated rant as he commented on his recent punishment ahead of Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix.

The 30-year-old told reporters: “I think I’m the biggest supporter of punctuality and being punctual to things, especially a national anthem, with all the authorities there.

“So I was the first one to put my hand up and say, ‘I’m late, I’m sorry for that.’

“At the same time, I was five seconds late. And to be five seconds late and have to pay €10,000 euros, for me it is out of the question that we’re having to pay these fines.”

Fortunately for Sainz, half of his fine from Suzuka has been suspended, forcing him to pay just over £4,000 for his late arrival.

However, he has now risked further financial punishment as he continued his furious rant.

The Williams driver added: “I don’t know if I’m going to get another fine for saying this but s*** happens. That’s the way it is. It’s the way it goes sometimes.

“I mean 10k, you guys know what 10k is here. For five seconds, it’s disappointing.

“As I always said, I hope someone tells me where this 10k goes and I can say at least it went for a nice cause, and I will be looking forward to see where they go.”

Further breaches of the updated swearing rules carry additional fines, with a second offence punishable by a £67.6k fine and suspended one-month ban.

Drivers can then punished with a £101k fine for their third offence along with the suspension and points penalty.

After recovering from his upset stomach, Sainz went on to finish 14th in Japan.

It leaves the former Ferrari star 15th in the Drivers’ Championship with just one point from the opening three races.

He has been in the points in Bahrain in each of the last five seasons, though.

Those finishes include finishing second behind then team-mate Charles Leclerc in 2022.

However, Sainz was replaced at Ferrari by Lewis Hamilton ahead of the current season.

It ended his four-year stint with the constructor despite winning twice last season in Australia and Mexico.

Sainz joined Williams on a multi-year deal following his exit, partnering Alex Albon on the grid this year.
