Aston Villa trail 3-1 at the midway point of their Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain. In truth, Unai Emery’s men were outclassed in the first leg at the Parc des Princes.
But with a master tactician in the dugout and home advantage behind them, it would be a mistake to rule Villa out. Can they overturn the deficit?

Aston Villa vs PSG predictions
If only they could have held out for just a little bit longer.
Aston Villa were outplayed for most of last week’s first leg against PSG in the Champions League quarter-finals. But heading into second-half stoppage time, they were only 2-1 down.
That would have been a decent result in the grand scheme of things.
However, PSG kept pushing until the final whistle and they were rewarded when Nuno Mendes extended their lead in time added on.
PSG now hold a 3-1 aggregate advantage ahead of the return match at Villa Park. That complicates the task facing Unai Emery’s side.
Just as they had done at home to Liverpool in the previous round, PSG were quick out of the blocks in the first leg.
They pinned Villa back in their own half of the field, yet Emery’s defence stood firm. And then, in the 35th minute, a brilliant breakaway ended with Morgan Rogers touching the ball home to give Villa the lead against the run of play.
At that point the visitors to the Parc des Princes would have been aiming to make it to half-time with their sheet still clean. As it was, Desire Doue’s magnificent strike restored parity within four minutes, before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put PSG ahead soon after the restart.
By the end of the night, Villa could have few complaints. They had their moments in Paris, but Luis Enrique’s thrilling team were superior on the night.
Emery insisted after the match that there is not much difference between 2-1 and 3-1, although not everyone will agree with that assessment.
“The third goal doesn’t change a lot,” he said. “At 2-1 we were thinking of the second leg as a game that we would want to win.
“We’re still here. I’m really proud of the players. How we’re developing at Aston Villa, in our demands, playing here against PSG. We competed fantastically. We were close to a good result.”
They will need to be more than close if they are to advance to the semi-finals this week. Villa are up against it and PSG are 1/16 favourites to go through, but Emery will hope that actually plays into his team’s hands.
After all, we are still at the halfway point and nothing has been decided yet.

Aston Villa vs PSG betting tips
Aston Villa need to produce a serious performance to keep their Champions League dreams alive.
Aston Villa or draw
PSG are a young team and they are ahead of schedule in their collective development.
No one expected the Parisians to be genuine contenders to win the Champions League this season, but now they are second-favourites with the bookies.
PSG showed impressive resilience at Anfield last month, but Aston Villa will hope they can put their opponents under real pressure here.

Scoring first would see the momentum swing in Villa’s favour and PSG would then be the ones having to soak up pressure, something they did not do at all in the first leg.
There is also a chance that Luis Enrique’s team will be caught in two minds: should they seek to protect or extend their lead? PSG will probably go through, but Villa can avoid defeat on the night.
Tip Aston Villa or draw at 7/10 with bet365
Over 2.5 goals
The first game between these two teams featured plenty of chances and a total of four goals.
Given that Aston Villa will need to go on the offensive from minute one, the second leg should be just as entertaining.
PSG have an abundance of talented attackers in their ranks. Of their last 15 games in all competitions, 11 have featured three goals or more.
As for Aston Villa, this wager has paid out in six consecutive matches across the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.
Goals are on the cards in Birmingham on Tuesday evening.
Back over 2.5 goals at 4/6 with bet365
Ollie Watkins to score any time
Ollie Watkins was a surprise omission from Aston Villa’s starting XI at the Parc des Princes.
Emery went with Marcus Rashford up front instead, presumably because he thought his speed in behind would cause PSG problems.
Rashford started against Southampton on Saturday too, but Watkins made a major difference off the bench and he should get the nod in the home leg.
The England international remains Villa’s primary goal threat and the hosts will need him to be at the top of his game here.
Watkins looks like the best pick to find the back of the net at Villa Park.
