Aston Villa returned to winning ways on Saturday afternoon in preparation for the club’s biggest game in over 40 years tonight against French champions PSG as they seek a spot in the Champions League semi finals.

Last week’s 3-1 defeat in the French capital ended a run of seven consecutive victories for Unai Emery’s side, but a 3-0 win over an already relegated Southampton side over the weekend not only restored confidence but also took the Villans to within a point of the Premier League’s top five.

With the top five teams now guaranteed to be in the Champions League next season, Saturday’s win saw the West Midlands side earn their sixth domestic victory in a row, keeping them in seventh place but are now just three points off third placed Nottingham Forest.

Emery’s men have made Villa Park something of a fortress this season, with the side not having lost in front of their home fans in any competition since the end of October, 17 matches ago, and have won four of their five Champions League games at home this season.

PSG’s weekend Ligue 1 fixture with Nantes was postponed in order for the club to put full attention on tonight’s Champions League tie against Aston Villa.

The French side have reached the semi finals of the competition in three of the last five years, including finishing runners up in 2020, but are still yet to lift the trophy for the first time.

Luis Enrique’s side have already wrapped up the French title for the fourth year in succession, doing so with six games to spare which also enables them to put full attention on their bid for a first ever Champions League title.
