Chelsea breezed to a 3-0 victory over Legia Warsaw in the first leg of their Conference League quarter-final. Enzo Maresca’s men already have one foot in the last four of the competition.

Legia will nevertheless be aiming to pull off a famous win at Stamford Bridge. Will Chelsea advance in style, or could the Polish team get something?

Chelsea vs Legia Warsaw predictions

Chelsea have one foot in the semi-finals of the Conference League, but all is not well at Stamford Bridge.

They may have breezed to a 3-0 victory over Legia Warsaw in the first leg of this last-eight tie, but a few days later Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by Ipswich Town.

It could prove to be a damaging result. The race for a top-five finish in the Premier League is wide open, with Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Chelsea, Manchester City and Aston Villa chasing the three remaining Champions League qualification spots.

The form book is not on Chelsea’s side. Over the last 10 rounds of fixtures, they rank 10th in the table. The draw with Ipswich means the Blues have now won just one of their last four top-flight games.

The problems run deeper than results. The divide between Enzo Maresca and a significant section of the fan base appears to be growing wider by the week.

There were rumblings of discontent during the Ipswich game, especially when Chelsea tried to play out from the back.

Maresca is wedded to his possession-based style, but his critics charge that his overbearing approach is inhibiting Chelsea’s players and taking away their scope for improvisation.

However, those imploring him to adopt a plan B do not realise that ‘A’ is the only letter in Maresca’s alphabet.

“I think we lost a little bit of confidence because we conceded, probably because of the environment [at Stamford Bridge],” Maresca said.

“This is the moment that you have to continue doing the right things and don’t change the plan. The second goal, we decide to play long, because the environment is there, and we concede the second one. You have to be strong, you have to continue with the things that you are doing.”

A trophy would ordinarily ease some of the pressure on an under-fire manager, but it is unclear how much good a Conference League triumph would do Maresca.

Chelsea have been red-hot favourites to win this competition from day one. Going all the way would simply be par for the course. Falling short would be a disaster.

There is no suggestion that Chelsea are considering making a change in the dugout even if they do ultimately miss out on Champions League football. But unless Maresca can win the supporters back over, he is on a hiding to nothing in west London.

Chelsea vs Legia Warsaw betting tips

Chelsea proved too strong for Legia Warsaw last week and we could see a repeat in the second leg.

Chelsea to win to nil

It took Chelsea until the 49th minute to take the lead in the first leg last week, but from that position they never looked like losing.

Legia Warsaw have a decent record on home turf this term, but they were no match for a rotated Chelsea side in the Polish capital.

Legia hardly laid a glove on their opponents, producing just one shot on target all game. They will find it even harder to create opportunities at Stamford Bridge in the return fixture.

For all their difficulties in recent months, Chelsea still have the fourth-best home record in the Premier League this season.

Another clean sheet beckons for the Blues when Legia head to London on Thursday.

Chelsea to win both halves

Chelsea could hardly have been more comfortable in the first leg. They created an xG of 4.17 compared to just 0.42 for their opponents.

It was a comprehensive victory that has given Chelsea a fair amount of breathing space in the tie.

With a tricky trip to Fulham coming up this weekend, Maresca is likely to rest some of his key men here.

He has done that throughout the Conference League campaign, often picking a second-string side entirely.

It has done his team no harm. This might not be a vintage version of Chelsea, but they are still far too strong for most other sides in this competition, as Thursday’s game is likely to demonstrate.

Tyrique George to score any time

Tyrique George scored his first goal for Chelsea against Legia Warsaw last week.

The forward showed a poacher’s instinct when he reacted quickest to turn the ball home after Reece James’ shot was saved.

“I’m really happy to score my first goal for my boyhood club,” George, who joined the club aged eight, said afterwards.

“I’ve played a few games now, but to score the first goal feels really good. It’s probably my best [moment for Chelsea].”

George should get another chance to impress on Thursday. Legia will struggle to keep Chelsea’s attack quiet, so it would not be a surprise if the 19-year-old helped himself to another goal in the second leg.
