The 2025 World Snooker Championship gets underway on Saturday at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, with Ronnie O’Sullivan seeking a record breaking eighth title.

This weekend the snooker season finale gets underway with the World Snooker Championship taking place in South Yorkshire.

All eyes, as ever, will be on Ronnie O’Sullivan as he looks to win a record eighth world title in the modern era, which would take him one clear of the record he shares with Stephen Hendry.

The 49-year-old hasn’t featured in many tournaments this season, even pulling out of the Masters back in January on medical grounds, making this just his second season without any tournament victory since he turned professional 32 years ago.

The seven-time world champion gets his tournament underway with his first round clash against Ali Carter on Tuesday afternoon.

The defending champion in this year’s tournament is Kyren Wilson, who won the trophy for the first time 12 months ago after defeating Jak Jones in the final, and heads into this year’s event in good form having won four titles this season, more than anyone else.

Wilson will be looking to break the “Crucible curse” of which no first-time champion has retained the title since the tournament moved to the Crucible Theatre in 1977.

World number one Judd Trump will also be heavily amongst the favourites for what would be his second world title, having won three tournaments already this season, including the UK Championship and the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters.

Masters champions Shaun Murphy will also be a name to look out for across the next few weeks, as will previous multiple-time snooker champions Mark Selby, John Higgins and Mark Williams.
