A statement from Rochdale, for whom he made 203 appearances, confirmed he died peacefully on Thursday morning surrounded by his family.

Thompson joined the club after a stint in the academy at United, who delivered a touching tribute on social media.

“A man who epitomised our club’s values,” they said on X. “We are saddened to share that Joe Thompson has passed away.

“A warm personality who had a deep connection with our club from a young age, our thoughts are with Joe’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

Rochdale added: “We first knew Joe primarily as a talented footballer, but we would soon grow to adore his loving, infectious personality.

“He faced every battle head-on, both on and off the pitch. His journey and indomitable spirit have been an inspiration for everyone who has been touched by his story.

“Above all of that, Joe was a loving husband to Chantelle and an incredible father to Thailula and Athena Rae.

“Our thoughts are with Joe’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time.”

Thompson joined the United youth setup in 1998 and left seven years later to join Rochdale.

His first-team debut for the club came at the age of 17 and another 156 outings followed, as well as promotion to League One, before he left for Tranmere Rovers in 2012.

The midfielder returned to Rochdale on loan for the second half of the 2012/13 season ahead of a permanent move to Bury.

Further loan spells came at Wrexham and Southport before a year-long stay with Carlisle United.

Thompson then made another Rochdale comeback in 2016 and remained at the club before his retirement three years later.

The Dale will wear black armbands during their National League fixture against Altrincham on Friday.

Rochdale will also pay tribute to Thompson when they return home to the Crown Oil Arena on Monday to face AFC Fylde.
