WWE WrestleMania viewers on Netflix distracted as on-air blunder ‘wrecks’ shock title win for underdog

Jey Uso won the WWE World Heavyweight title at WrestleMania but Netflix viewers found it hard to concentrate on his post-match joy.

Uso challenged long-reigning champ Gunther in an epic opening match at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas.

The hugely charismatic superstar earned the right to face The Ring General by winning the Royal Rumble back in January and has surfed an incredible wave of popularity over the last year or so.

Questions surrounded whether or not WWE would pull the proverbial trigger and give the nod to the underdog to dethrone Gunther – one of the company’s most dominant stars – over the course of a brutal build-up.

Their rivalry was knocked into high gear on Raw a few weeks ago after Gunther left Uso’s brother, Jimmy, in a bloodied heap while he watched on, handcuffed to one of the ring ropes.

Unfortunately for the hard-working performers in the ring, a pivotal moment of that part of the show – Jey’s arrival on the scene to aid his sibling – was partially ruined by an apparent production error that viewers watching on Netflix were quick to flag.

Uso and Gunther recovered sufficiently to overcome that mishap to complete the remainder of their pre-WrestleMania build up, but lightning sadly appeared to strike twice on the night of the big show itself.

60,000 watching on at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas were none the wiser as the 39-year-old pulled off the mother of all upsets by winning the championship, forcing the incumbent to tap out courtesy of one of his own, trademark sleeper holds.

But while they were busy celebrating with the newly-crowned champ, viewers on Netflix around the world were – just as with the vital segment on Raw – distracted by something else altogether.

In giving those watching recaps of the key moments of the match after the final bell, WWE and Netflix transitioned in and out of replays, but did so not by showing graphics of WrestleMania, but of Survivor Series: War Games instead.

Several times images of WWE’s annual November event flashed on screen either side of highlights, a handful of fans on social media quick to notice it the first time, but many piling in to point it out once it was repeated several times.

Posing the obvious question on X, one user said: “Why are you promoting Survivor Series War Games instead of Wrestlemania?!”

A second, perhaps more harshly, added: “Someone getting fired! Why [are replays] coming up as Survivor Series: War Games during the replays?”

A third, equally as disappointed at seeing the imposing Gunther tap out at the climax of the match, grunted: “Not sure what’s worse. Gunther being booked to tap to Jey Uso, or a Survivor Series War Games transition screen being used after.”

Equally as unhappy, another said: “That’s that celebration wrecked!” while one further post, finally seeing the funny side, chirped: “Winning it all at WrestleMania War Games is crazy. Good job, Jey.”

There was drama aplenty early at WrestleMania, with Triple H announcing a huge new signing prior to the event while legend Rey Mysterio was pulled from the show minutes before it went on air through injury.
