The 2025 Ryder Cup promises to be one of the most thrilling in history as Team Europe look to beat their American rivals in New York.

Luke Donald led Europe to a dominant win over USA in Rome in September 2023, which followed on from the American’s one-sided victory in Whistling Straits two years prior.

Team Europe claimed a stunning win over USA in Rome

The last Ryder Cup was filled with drama and controversy off the course as well as a host of world-class action on it.

The home side has had a distinct advantage in recent tournaments but Europe, spearheaded by new Grand Slam champion Rory McIlroy, will hope to change that this autumn.

McIlroy, superb in Italy, will lead his side once again alongside the likes of Tommy Fleetwood, Ludvig Aberg and, hopefully, Jon Rahm.

But Team USA will be laden with top talent, with Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau set to make up their side.

And with the raucous crowds of Farmingdale, New York and the brutal test at Bethpage Black, golf fans are in for a treat.

Ryder Cup 2025 : Dates and how to follow

Ryder Cup 2025: The teams

The PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe will confirm their teams in due course.

The 2011 US Open champion Keegan Bradley, who is only 38 years old, will captain Team USA while Luke Donald returns to skipper the Europeans.

Both captains have decided to construct their teams with six automatic qualifiers and six picks.

Much is still to be decided in terms of qualification but currently, Scheffler, Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, DeChambeau, Russell Henley and Justin Thomas would make the US team outright.

And for Europe, the top six would include McIlroy, Tyrrell Hatton, Justin Rose, Rasmus Hojgaard, Shane Lowry and Ludvig Aberg.

Team USA’s qualifiers will be confirmed following the BMW Championship on August 17 while Europe’s qualifiers will be set after the Betfred British Masters on August 24.

Following that, Bradley and Donald will announce their six captain’s picks.

In an unusual situation, Bradley could yet become an automatic qualifier or legitimately warrant a pick.

Ryder Cup 2025: The format

A total of 28 points are up for grabs at the Ryder Cup and each team must reach 14½ to claim victory.

The competition is held over three days with three different disciplines – the foursomes, the fourballs and the singles.

Friday and Saturday will see four foursome (alternate shot) matches and four fourball (better ball) matches take place before Sunday’s 12 singles matches.

Each match is worth one point while any match that is tied after 18 holes will see both teams earn half a point.

Should the tournament finish 14-14, the team who won the previous edition will retain the trophy.

Every player will play in the Sunday one-on-one matches but the pairs for the other matches will be announced by the captains shortly before each session.

Ryder Cup 2025: The course

Bethpage Black will play to a par 71 and a daunting length of 7,426 yards.

The infamous New York track is known to be one of the most brutal in the world and even comes with a warning on the first tee of ‘The Black Course is an extremely difficult course which we recommend only for highly skilled golfers’.

It has held three major championships – most recently the 2019 PGA Championship, which was won by Brooks Koepka.

At that tournament, only six players finished the week under par while Andrew Filbert, a PGA Assistant Professional from Florida, missed the cut at 26-over for the opening two days.

While it will likely be set up slightly easier for the Ryder Cup than major championship weeks, Bethpage Black will still be a demanding test with its narrow fairways, deep roughs, and heavy bunkering.

Many matches could be decided on the 15th hole which is nicknamed ‘The Beast’.

Ryder Cup 2025: What has been said?

Grand Slam champion McIlroy was part of the European team that secured the ‘Miracle at Medinah’ on US soil in 2012.

An away team has not won since then and McIlroy is eager to take the fight to the Americans in New York.

Following victory in Rome, he said: “I’ve said this for the last probably six or seven years to anyone that will listen – I think one of the biggest accomplishments in golf right now is winning an away Ryder Cup.

“And that’s what we’re going to do at Bethpage.

“I am so proud to be part of this team. Incredible day, incredible week with all these guys.

“We were hurting after Whistling Straits and the players on that team wanted to redeem ourselves and prove to the world that is not who we are.

“We delivered a great performance.”
