The talkSPORT commentary desk was left disillusioned with the state of the boxing ring for Saturday night’s action at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn are due to finally square off in the feature attraction – 30 years after their fathers’ epic duels in the early 1990s.

Yet, an undercard bout between Viddal Riley and Chev Clarke for the British cruiserweight title was cause for concern for the featured attraction.

The pair slipped and slid around the canvas during their British cruiserweight title fight.

A build-up of humidity on the painted advert in the centre of the ring caused both boxers to lose their footing on multiple occasions.

At one point, it got so bad that the referee paused the action to wipe the ring after the boxers took a tumble.

Speaking on the talkSPORT commentary, John Rawlings said: “Now there’s a slip here, and this time it was Riley who felt it, and the referee is going across now and is speaking to, I think, the board stewards here, saying that something has to be done.

“And he himself has taken a clock, and the referee is on his knees out there, rubbing the surface of the ring, and I think that it’s going to need more than one little towel to sort this out.”

Spencer Oliver added: “Yeah, that’s going to be a big problem moving forward, you know, because that Canvas is not going to change.”

Gareth A. Davies then chimed in by saying: “This canvas is printed, not painted, so as a result, there is less friction on it.

“And the only way that boxers can get around this, and if anyone’s listening in the dressing room, is to sandpaper the bottom of your boots, because normally painted canvases are the case, but in this instance, it was printed, so there’s less friction.

“There are two canvases in the event that there’s too much blood or too much water, or it rains, there is a canvas underneath, but it will not make any difference whatsoever.”

Adam Catterall then urged the British Boxing Board to ‘rip up’ the canvas.

“They need to change it,” he said. “They need to change it, and they need to rip that off, and they need to get rid of all the sponsorship, because this is going to affect the fight.”

Oliver was in agreement.

“Yeah, and I say the big problem boys, I don’t think any of them, fighters in them dressing rooms are going to have any sandpaper. What do you reckon?” said the former European champion.

General Secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC), Robert Smith, climbed into the ring between the second and third fights of the night to inspect the canvas.

It was wiped down one more time for good measure before Liam Smith and Aaron McKenna made their way to their ring to duke it out in a super welterweight clash.
