Liverpool only need a point to win the Premier League title. If they avoid defeat by Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, Arne Slot’s side will be crowned champions of England.

Tottenham have nothing meaningful left to play for in the top flight. Their full focus is on the Europa League, so this should be a reasonably straightforward assignment for the Reds.

Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur predictions

You would have to be in your 40s to clearly remember the last time Liverpool won the league title in front of their supporters.

The Reds were champions of England as recently as 2020, but that triumph came during the coronavirus pandemic when football was being played inside empty stadiums.

On top of that, Liverpool were not on the field when they wrapped up the title that year. The deal was sealed when Manchester City lost to Chelsea.

You therefore have to go all the way back to 28 April 1990 to find the last time Liverpool secured top spot in the top flight on their own terms.

A 2-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers on that day 35 years ago made Kenny Dalglish’s team uncatchable in first place. Arne Slot’s side have the chance to replicate that achievement on Sunday.

It has long been clear that Liverpool would win the title this season. Arsenal have been too inconsistent to keep pace with Slot’s team. Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace was Arsenal’s 13th stalemate this season.

Had Palace scored once more at the Emirates Stadium, Liverpool would be champions already. Yet many of their supporters, particularly those with tickets for Sunday’s game, will be pleased that Arsenal held on for a point. Winning the title in front of your own supporters is the dream scenario.

Liverpool have not been at their electric best over the last few weeks. Talk of a potential treble or quadruple faded pretty fast after Slot’s men were knocked out of the FA Cup and the Champions League relatively early. They also lost the EFL Cup final to Newcastle United.

They have not been quite as dominant in the Premier League of late either. Liverpool lost 3-2 to Fulham earlier this month, while their last three wins have all come by a single-goal margin.

Even so, there is no denying that they have been the best team in the country this season – and by some distance too. Liverpool could still reach 94 points, which would be their third-highest tally of all time.

It is also worth remembering that even in the last eight games (seemingly a difficult period for Liverpool) no one has collected more points than the champions-elect.

Liverpool should have too much quality for Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool -2 handicap

Tottenham Hotspur’s bodies will be at Anfield on Sunday, but their minds may well be elsewhere.

The north Londoners’ season essentially boils down to the Europa League, with Ange Postecoglou likely to name a weakened starting XI against Liverpool ahead of Thursday’s semi-final first leg against Bodo/Glimt.

A point would do for Liverpool, but there is no chance whatsoever that they will play for a draw. Slot and his players will be determined to win the title in style.

Liverpool thrashed Spurs 4-0 at Anfield in the EFL Cup in February. This game might not be quite as one-sided, but it should still be a comfortable afternoon for the Reds.

Tottenham have been too easy to play against all campaign and that will probably be the case again this weekend.

Both teams to score

For all their problems this term (and there have been many), Tottenham have consistently packed a punch in attack.

Postecoglou’s charges are 16th in the Premier League, yet they rank fifth for goals scored, sixth for expected goals, sixth for shots and fifth for shots on target.

For better or worse, Tottenham always have a go. That is one reason to back them to find the net on Sunday.

Another is that Liverpool’s backline has not been completely watertight recently, having been breached by the likes of Southampton and West Ham United.

Spurs will not keep a clean sheet, so goals at both ends feels like a no-brainer.

Diogo Jota to score any time

Mohamed Salah is the favourite in the anytime scorer market, although by his sky-high standards the Egypt international has been quiet of late. From a betting perspective, it is worth looking elsewhere.

Diogo Jota did not start against Leicester City last time out, but he was in the XI in Liverpool’s three previous matches and is in line to return on Sunday.

The Portuguese has only scored six goals in the league this season, but he remains one of Liverpool’s best finishers.

Given how easy it is to create chances against Tottenham, Jota will fancy his chances of making the net bulge on Sunday.
