Jurgen Klopp has faced a disappointing start to his post-managerial career as RB Leipzig failed to qualify for European football.

After nine glittering years as Liverpool boss, Klopp became the new Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull in January.

The German is tasked with advising their network of football clubs on coaching, philosophy, development and transfers.

Leipzig are one of Red Bull’s leading teams despite being founded just 16 years ago, but the 2024/25 season has been one to forget.

On Saturday, they lost 3-2 against VfB Stuttgart on the Bundesliga final day to confirm their seventh-place finish in the table.

Ironically, it was one of Klopp’s former clubs who beat Leipzig to the final European qualification spot in the Bundesliga.

Mainz 05, where Klopp spent 11 years as a player and seven years as manager, have finished above them in sixth by just one point.

They will play in the UEFA Conference League play-off round, whilst Leipzig have missed out on continental football.

Since 2017, they have spent seven consecutive seasons in Europe and even reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2020.

But a disappointing campaign has ended this run and will see them miss out on the financial rewards that come with qualification.

Leipzig will also be heading into a summer transfer window during which two of their best players could be heading for exits.

Xavi Simons and Benjamin Sesko are expected to leave the club ahead of next season, according to reports.

Simons completed a permanent move from Paris Saint-Germain in January after an initial season-and-a-half loan spell.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has scored 21 goals and assisted another 23 in 76 appearances across his two campaigns.

Sesko has netted 39 times for Leipzig since joining from fellow Red Bull side Salzburg in 2023.

Arsenal admire the Slovenia international and could become his new club, although the Gunners are also chasing Viktor Gyokeres of Sporting Lisbon.

Leipzig are also set for a new managerial appointment after sacking Marco Rose in March.

Zsolt Low, who assisted Thomas Tuchel at PSG, Chelsea and Bayern Munich has been in interim charge since.
