Revenge on cards for Red Devils
Manchester United had many lows in the Premier League last season as they slumped to an eighth-place finish but the nadir might well have been a humiliating 4-0 humbling at the hands of Crystal Palace in May.
Palace were a bogey team for United – the Eagles also ran out 1-0 winners at Old Trafford – but Erik ten Hag’s team can gain revenge on their return to Selhurst Park.
You have to go back to 2020 for the last time United have won at Palace, but there have been positive signs this season with United beating Fulham and Southampton in the Premier League as well as smashing seven past Barnsley in the EFL Cup on Tuesday.
Ten Hag’s side were unlucky to lose to a last-gasp goal at Brighton and Liverpool’s 3-0 win at Old Trafford just highlights the gulf in class between the two rivals.
Palace are nowhere near the level of Liverpool judging by a dodgy start to the season which has seen a return of two points as well as defeats to Brentford and West Ham.
Casemiro, the fall guy for United against Liverpool, no longer needs to be deployed in midfield and there is the semblance of an improved defence following the signings of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich.
Hammers to nail derby delight
Consistency is not Chelsea’s strong point and they look like a team to avoid at short odds for a tricky trip across London to take on West Ham.
A late Christopher Nkunku goal saw the Blues grab maximum points at Bournemouth last week, but the hosts missed a penalty and dominated for large spells of the contest.
The Blues allowed seven shots on target and Enzo Maresca’s new-look side could well be punished by West Ham’s talented forward line.
The Hammers are still looking to gel following a summer spending splurge but there is huge quality in Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus and this might be when coach Julen Lopetegui gets to celebrate a home league win for the first time.
It’s been a difficult start with Aston Villa and Manchester City visiting the London Stadium and Chelsea would also fall into that category, but Maresca’s men look more vulnerable compared to the other two teams, who are both plying their trade in the Champions League.
Villa value for win
Winless Wolves have conceded 11 goals in four Premier League matches this season and they could be heading for another defeat at Aston Villa.
Unai Emery’s hosts need to juggle the demands of Champions League football, but their midweek 3-0 success at Young Boys was relatively easy and they have had since Tuesday to recover.
That was Villa’s fourth win in five this season – the exception was an unlucky 2-0 loss to Arsenal – and they are full of attacking prowess.
Villa have scored three goals in back-to-back outings and are worth backing to win in a match which features over 1.5 goals.
