‘Hope this can help’ – Why Inter are first team in 26 years to wear their third kit in Champions League final

Inter Milan are the first team in 26 years to wear their third kit in a Champions League final ahead of their clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Nerazzurri will not play in their famous blue and black stripes for the European Cup showpiece against PSG in Munich.

The colours are synonymous with Simone Inzaghi’s side, in contrast to the red and black of local rivals AC Milan.

It has been the design for every previous appearance by Inter in a Champions League final until the 2025 event, live on talkSPORT.

However, PSG are officially the home team in Munich, with blue and black proving a kit clash between the two sides.

As a result, Inter had to choose between their second and third strips, but made the unusual decision to leave their away jerseys at home.

Why are Inter wearing their third kit?

No official reason has been given for the decision, but reports from Italy fuelled speculation that superstition played its part.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the squad unanimously made the unique choice to wear their vibrant yellow kit.

The report adds that superstition may be a factor, with Inter winning both of their European games this season in their third shirt.

In contrast, the club’s only defeat in their run to the final came away at Bayer Leverkusen back in December, in their white away kit.

A statement on Inter’s website, explaining their decision, read: “The tones that have represented the colour of the clubs’ third kit for many years are very much back for the 2024/25 season.

“During this year’s Champions League, The Nerazzurri have worn this kit in their away game against Sparta Prague on Matchday 7 of the Legaue Phase (0-1, Lautaro) and in our win against Feyenoord in Rotterdam in the first leg of the Round of 16 (0-2, Thuram, Lautaro).”

The buzz surrounding the alleged superstition saw Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella be quizzed on the kit decision for the final this week.

“We had a chat, there were a number of options on the table and we went for the yellow shirt,” he said, smiling.

“Nothing more than that, it’s a shirt that we like and so we hope that this jersey can help us as well in this final.”

Inter are seeking their fourth Champions League or European Cup title, and first since 2010, following successive wins in 1964, and 1965.

Inzaghi’s men reached the final as recently as 2023, but fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Pep Guardiola’s treble-winning Manchester City.

Crucially, they did win their last UEFA Cup in 1998 while wearing a third kit—beating Lazio 3-0… in Paris.
