Republic of Ireland v Senegal prediction
The Republic of Ireland welcome Senegal to the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Friday night for their first of two friendlies in this international window, before heading off to Luxembourg to take on the Benelux side on Tuesday.
Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side head into their home game against Senegal in confident mood after 2-1 wins home and away against Bulgaria back in March in a Nations League play-off promotion/relegation play-off which saw them keep their place in League B.
The Icelandic manager has now won three of his last four matches in charge of the Boys in Green, including back to back wins at the Aviva, marking a positive turnaround after losing three of his opening four games in charge since taking over last summer.
These two friendlies this month will act as preparation for Ireland’s bid of reaching a first World Cup since 2002, with their qualifying campaign getting underway in September, looking to finish in the top two of a group containing Portugal, Hungary and Armenia.
Senegal are in Dublin for their first ever match against the Republic of Ireland, the first of their two stop tour of the British Isles ahead of their friendly against England in Nottingham next Tuesday.
The African side make the trip to Ireland this week unbeaten in 90 minutes in their last 20 matches in all competitions, dating all the way back to September 2023, which was their only defeat in any competition since being knocked out of the 2022 World Cup by England.
Former Senegal striker Pape Thiaw, who was part of the side who reached the quarter finals of the 2002 World Cup, has won five of his six matches since taking over as manager back in October last year, initially on a caretaker basis but has since been given the job full time.
Senegal are currently in the midst of their World Cup qualifying campaign, and currently sit second in their six-team group behind DR Congo with four matches to play, including a huge first v second match in September, with only the top team guaranteed to qualify for the World Cup, with four of the nine best second placed teams advancing to a play-off to take part in the inter-confederation play-offs.
The Lions of Teranga make the trip to Dublin as favourites for victory but Hallgrimsson’s side will fancy themselves at a result, leading me to believe a stalemate seems a very plausible outcome – particularly a 1-1 draw.

Republic of Ireland have won three of their last four matches though Senegal are unbeaten since September 2023, but home advantage will likely play a part under the lights at the Aviva Stadium.
The Emerald Isle nation have conceded first in nine of their last 10 international matches in all competitions.
