Earps played a key role in England’s success in the last Euros, as they won the tournament and sparked incredible scenes around the country.

But after starting every game in that tournament four years ago, she isn’t featuring at all this time around and here’s why…

Why is Mary Earps not in the England squad?

Earps has announced her retirement from international football.

Only five weeks before the start of Women’s Euro 2025, the goalkeeper, who has 53 Lionesses caps, revealed the news.

In a statement released on May 27, the 32-year-old said: “I have taken the difficult decision to retire internationally.

“It has been the greatest honour and privilege of my life, to wear this badge, represent my country and play alongside such an incredible group of players.

“I’ve spent a long time making this decision and it’s not one I’ve made lightly.

“For me, ultimately this is the right time for me to step aside and give the younger generation an opportunity to thrive.

“Winning the EUROs in 2022 was the best day of my life, and I’m rooting for the girls to do it again this summer.”

Earps’ decision came after it appeared she had lost her place as first-choice goalkeeper to Hannah Hampton of Chelsea

Goalkeepers: Hannah Hampton, Khiara Keating, Anna Moorhouse

Defenders: Lucy Bronze, Lotte Wubben Moy, Jess Carter, Niamh Charles, Maya Le Tissier, Esme Morgan, Alex Greenwood, Leah Williamson

Midfielders: Grace Clinton, Jess Park, Ella Toone, Georgia Stanway, Keira Walsh

Forwards: Lauren hemp, Beth Mead, Lauren James, Chloe Kelly, Aggie Beever-Jones, Michelle Agyemang, Alessia Russo

Reports claim talks had been ongoing between Earps and manager Sarina Wiegman about her starting spot in the England side.

However, clearly the place had gone to Hampton, and she has now hung up her boots, telling her teammates the day before her statement, according to Sky Sports.

Hampton, Khiara Keating and Anna Moorhouse are the three goalkeepers heading to Euro 2025 in Switzerland.

On Earps’ retirement, Lionesses boss Wiegman said: “I had hoped that Mary would play an important role within the squad this summer, so of course I am disappointed.

“Mary has been clear on her reasons why she has made the decision and it is something we need to accept. She has made a huge contribution to not only the team, but the whole of English football.

“We will cherish those memories and of course give Mary the tributes she deserves after the summer but for now the focus needs to be on the upcoming EUROs.”

Alongside Earps, Millie Bright is another big name missing for England.

Chelsea defender Bright, who was Lionesses captain at the World Cup in 2023 and a key part of the Euro-winning 2022 squad too, ruled herself out this week.

Fran Kirby also called time on her international career only a day earlier after being informed that she would not be making the team.

The Women’s Euro 2025 will get started on July 2 and run until July 27.
