Canelo Alvarez’s rival ‘would love’ to hijack Terence Crawford fight and get vengeance for his brother after KO loss

David Benavidez has unfinished business with Terence Crawford.

‘El Monstruo’ is currently operating three weight classes above ‘Bud’ but insists he would welcome a fight with the two-weight undisputed champion if given the opportunity.

Not primarily because of the magnitude of the fight but rather to get vengeance over the Baltimore banger for knocking out his brother, Jose Benavidez.

The pair met back in October 2018 when Crawford was the WBO welterweight champion.

Benavidez entered the fight as an undefeated 25-0 contender but was handed the first defeat of his professional career by Crawford via a last-gasp 12th-round TKO.

At the time of stoppage, Crawford was ahead on all three judges’ scorecards by margins of 110–99, 108–101 and 107–102.

After dropping Benavidez with a right uppercut in the second half of the final round, Crawford swarmed his adversary against the ropes as the referee stepped in and waved off the contest.

Six years on from that night, two-time WBC super-middleweight champion, David, has not forgotten what Crawford did to his older brother.

“Yeah, I’ve been wanting to get it,” Benavidez told Mr Organik.

“I would love to get it, but I don’t think he’d come up to 168lbs.

“I’m not even at 168lbs anymore, but I’d love to fight or even spar Crawford.”

Another satisfying incentive for Benavidez would be the opportunity to hijack the Crawford fight from fierce rival Canelo Alvarez.

Benavidez has been chasing a blockbuster showdown with the Mexican superstar to no avail.

He was Canelo’s WBC mandatory at 168lbs for over a year but the former pound-for-pound king showed little interest in getting the fight over the line.

As a result, Benavidez moved up to light-heavyweight in June and scored a dominant unanimous decision win over Oleksandr Gvozdyk.

In doing so, he picked up the WBC ‘interim’ trinket and is now in line to face the winner of Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev‘s undisputed clash on October 12.

Canelo recently defended his unified titles against Edgar Berlanga and is now being targeted for a super fight with Crawford.

Saudi boxing chief HE Turki Alalshikh has had the match-up at the top of his boxing wishlist for some time and recently called for the fight while attending UFC 306 at the Las Vegas Sphere with Crawford.

“Yo Turki, tell them we are going to go for Canelo next,” said Crawford.

“Yes,” replied HE Alalshikh. “Let’s go! Canelo, come on. We are ready.”

Crawford then added: “You heard it from him. Just put me in the game b****.

“Canelo-Crawford, the biggest fight in boxing. But we stay ready though.

“We stay ready, that way we ain’t got to get ready.”
