Epsom Derby Day One tips: Race rundown for Ladies Day

The ladies take centre stage on and off the course as the glamour arrives on day one of the Epsom Derby Festival.

There is a lot to look forward to today, topped off with two Group 1 races, the highlight of which is the Betfred Oaks. Eight classic chasing fillies will head to post for the second classic of the season, but only one will have what it takes to cement their legacy in the history books and be crowned the 2025 Betfred Oaks champion.

⚡ Quick Epsom day one tips: Win singles

1:30 Listed Nyetimber Surrey Stakes – 7f

You can see why Diego Ventura sits at the top of the market after a good win in a similar contest in Longchamp three weeks ago. He keeps the headgear today and looks sure to run his race, but FORMAL is fancied to upset the favourite.

The daughter of Dubawi won two of her three starts for Sir Michael Stoute last season, and she was running an encouraging race on her return for her new trainer, only for race fitness to take its toll in the end. Now that that’s behind her, expect a much-improved performance today on ground she will handle.

FORMAL

  • Trainer: Andrew Balding
  • Jockey: Oisin Murphy
  • Form: 114-8
  • Age: 3
    Weight: 8st 11lb

🏇 Bet on FORMAL to win the Listed Nyetimber Surrey Stakes at 4/1 with BetVictor 🏇

2:05 Betfred British EBF Woodcote Stakes – 6f

Havana Hurricane and MAXIMIZED both left a telling impression when winning on debut, but you can’t get away from the touch of class the Maximized showed when winning at Haydock.

The £750,000 breeze-up purchase won with plenty left up his sleeve, and if he shows improvement from his debut, it’s easy to see this son of Mehmas being hard to beat.

MAXIMIZED

  • Trainer: Charlie Appleby
  • Jockey: William Buick
  • Form: 1
  • Age: 2
  • Weight: 9st 7lb

🏇 Bet on MAXIMIZED to win the Betfred British EBF Woodcote Stakes at 11/8 with bet365 🏇

2:40 Group 1 Betfred Coronation Cup – 1m4f

If all is well with Calanagan, then the French runner will prove a tough nut to crack, but it may not be as straightforward as you think for the Gleneagles gelding.

Jan Brueghel will be a massive danger if he behaves himself and does not hang as he did on his comeback. However, the one at a price that may be worth taking a chance on is the Group 1 winning filly, YOU GOT TO ME. She has a bit to find with Jan Brueghel on their meeting in the St Ledger, but this high-class filly was feeling the end of a long season at Doncaster. Now, back from a break and improvement to come, You Got To Me has what it takes to be firmly in the mix.

YOU GOT TO ME

  • Trainer: Ralph Beckett
  • Jockey: David Eagan
  • Form: 44127-
  • Age: 4
  • Weight: 8st 13lb

🏇 Bet on YOU GOT TO ME to win the Group 1 Betfred Oaks at 20/1 with SBK 🏇

3:15 Betfred Nifty 50 Handicap – 1m2f

A deeply competitive 10f contest were giving BOTANICAL another chance to get his head in front can pay dividends. He was progressive last season for Roger Varian and nearly made a winning start for George Boughey, only to be just failed to get by Goodwood specialist Novus.

His second at Goodwood was on heavy ground, so the rain-softened conditions today will hold no fears for Botanical. Should the first-time cheekpieces and the booking of Ryan Moore have the desired effect, then he has every chance of Botanical getting off the mark for his new trainer.

BOTANICAL

  • Trainer: George Boughey
  • Jockey: Ryan Moore
  • Form: 022-35
  • Age: 5
  • Weight: 9st 12lb

🏇 Bet on BOTANICAL to win the Betfred Nifty 50 Handicap at 4/1 with Ladbrokes 🏇

4:00 Group 1 Betfred Epsom Oaks – 1m4f

With question marks over the Oaks trip for 1000 Guineas winner, Desert Flower, today may be the day to take on the superstar filly. Aidan O’Brien runs three, and even though Ryan Moore has chosen to ride Minnie Hauk, Ballydoyle’s best chance may lie with Muisdora winner WHIRL.

Having made little impression on her seasonal return, Whirl looked a different proposition when she was upped in trip to just over 1m2f when dominating the Group 2 Muisdora. The daughter of Wootton Bassett shaped as if the Oaks trip will unlock even more improvement, and should that be the case, it’s hard to see her not fighting out the finish.

WHIRL

  • Trainer: Aidan O’Brien
  • Jockey: Wayne Lordan
  • Form: 511-61
  • Age: 3
  • Weight: 9st 2lb

🏇 Bet on WHIRL to win the Group 1 Betfred Oaks at 6/1 with BetVictor 🏇

4:35 Trustatrader Handicap – 1m 1/2f

Too Tempting was very tempting to side with, given his course record. However, given that he now races off 101, he may be vulnerable, so a chance is taken that MR BALOO can transfer his good all-weather form to the turf.

He ran well at Newmarket last month when finishing second, two lengths behind the winner, Great Chieftain, who has since won again. He gets in here off the same mark, so expect Mr Baloo to go well at a price.

MR BALOO

  • Trainer: Richard Hannon
  • Jockey: Sean Levey
  • Form: 311133
  • Age: 4
  • Weight: 8st 13lb

🏇 Bet on MR BALOO to win the Trustatrader Handicap at 7/1 with bet365 🏇

5:10 Debenhams Handicap – 7f

Two former course and distance winners top the head of the market, where siding with last time-out winner MISS INFORMATION can pay off.

She was a cosy winner at Newmarket (front two clear), and we have already seen her back up a win last season over course and distance. She has been given a 4lb rise by the handicapper for her Newmarket success, but that shouldn’t be a problem, as the underfoot conditions shouldn’t be either. With Oisin Murphy keeping the ride, she has a massive chance of making it back-to-back course and distance wins.

MISS INFORMATION

  • Trainer: Andrew Balding
  • Jockey: Oisin Murphy
  • Form: 435-51
  • Age: 4
  • Weight: 9st 5lb

🏇 Bet on MISS INFORMATION to win the Debenhams Handicap at 7/2 with SBK 🏇
