Wales are going along nicely under Craig Bellamy, but there is still plenty of work to be done in their bid to qualify for World Cup 2026. The Dragons have four points to their name after two games ahead of their return to action on Friday.

Liechtenstein are European minnows, so Wales are strong favourites in this one. Will they get the job done?

Wales vs Liechtenstein predictions

Wales famously reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016, a tremendous achievement for a country of their size. They then qualified for World Cup 2022 in what was essentially the final hurrah for the nation’s golden generation.

Gareth Bale departed the scene after the tournament in Qatar, which saw Wales eliminated in the group stage. Bale was the team’s talisman for so many years and, as a truly world-class performer on his day, he was pretty much irreplaceable.

Wales do not have a superstar of the same calibre these days, but that does not mean they cannot be competitive on the European stage.

Craig Bellamy has done a fine job in his first year at the helm, making Wales into a more proactive and well-rounded team after replacing Rob Page in the hot seat.

Bellamy led Wales to an impressive first-place finish in their Nations League group, earning promotion to League A for the next cycle. Wales beat Montenegro, Iceland and a Turkey team that had caught the eye at Euro 2024 to top spot.

They have made a solid start to World Cup qualification too, taking four points from the first six available. But even though the tournament is expanding from 32 teams to 48, it will still be tough for Wales to get there.

Only one side from their group will qualify automatically, and Belgium are strong favourites to claim that solitary berth. The second-place finisher will advance to the play-offs, but Wales face competition from North Macedonia and potentially Kazakhstan to finish as runners-up.

It is essential, then, that they do not drop any points against Liechtenstein, the probable whipping boys of Group J. The margins in this group are likely to be tight, and one slip-up against the worst team within it could prove fatal.

Wales will play in front of a sold-out crowd at the Cardiff City Stadium on Friday, a situation that Bellamy believes is ideal for his team’s development.

“I never want us to be comfortable. That’s why everyone’s here, we’ve got to go out and perform. Even the games I tried to pick in friendlies as well, I want pressure situations, I believe that’s how we improve,” he said.

“More crowd puts us under the spotlight a lot more, but allows us to become the nation that we believe we are.”

Wales vs Liechtenstein betting tips

Wales and Liechtenstein are ready to do battle in a World Cup qualifier on Friday evening.

Wales -3 handicap

Wales’s success in the 2024/25 Nations League was built on a solid defence. They conceded only four goals in six games, the second-best record in League B.

Wales have made major strides forward under Bellamy, but the manager will still want to make his team a more effective attacking force.

The Dragons scored three times against Kazakhstan in the last international break and their aim here will be to improve on that return.

Liechtenstein are one of the weakest teams in Europe and it is hard to see them causing Wales too many problems.

Bellamy’s boys can win this match by at least three goals – but probably more.

Under 1.5 goals in the first half

As mentioned above, Bellamy wants Wales to be a front-footed, possession-based side, rather than a reactive, counter-attacking one.

Of course, they will still need to be sharp on the break when they play bigger nations like Belgium, but on Friday they will be faced with an opponent that sits deep and aims to spoil.

Wales must show they can handle a team like that by remaining patient and getting in behind a low block.

However, it could take them a while to get going, as Liechtenstein aim to make life as difficult as possible for the hosts.

We might have to wait until the second half for the bulk of the goals.

Harry Wilson to score any time

“[Eight games unbeaten] shows what a good team we are,” Harry Wilson said this week.

“The style we’re playing now, both on the ball and off the ball, suits a lot of players in this team and that’s why we’re on such a good run.”

Wilson is one of those players who has benefitted from Bellamy’s switch in emphasis, and he will be a major threat in this match.

The Fulham forward ended the domestic season strongly and he will be looking to carry that form onto the international stage.

Wilson is a clean striker of the ball and we like his chances of making the net bulge in Cardiff.
