Two thrilling Nations League semi finals took place across Wednesday and Thursday to deliver two worthy finalists who also happen to be noisy neighbours of each other, as Spain and Portugal contest an Iberian derby in Munich with silverware on the line.

Spain, the reigning European and defending Nations League champions, will head into Sunday night’s final as odds on favourites for victory after putting five goals past France in their semi final in Stuttgart on Thursday night.

A brace from 17-year-old superstar Lamine Yamal as well as goals from Nico Williams, Mikel Merino and Pedri, gave Luis de la Fuente’s side what ended up being quite a nervy if enthralling 5-4 victory against their northern neighbours.

Spain now boast a 24 match unbeaten run in competitive matches dating all the way back to their 2-0 defeat to Scotland in Glasgow in the first international break after the 2022 World Cup, and a win on Sunday would leave them having won three consecutive trophies without losing a competitive fixture.

Portugal came from behind in their semi final to upset Finals hosts Germany in Munich on Wednesday night, two goals in the space of five second half minutes from Francisco Conceicao and Cristiano Ronaldo cancelling out Florian Wirtz’s opener.

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez will be managing against his native Spain on Sunday night, when he will stand just 90 minutes away from winning his first trophy as manager since guiding Wigan to FA Cup glory in 2013.

The Spaniard leads his Portuguese side to the final having lost only one of his last nine matches since their Euro 2024 exit in a quarter final penalty shoot out to France, with that defeat coming in the first leg of their Nations League quarter final to Denmark in March, a fixture which they ultimately progressed from.

Five of the last six Iberian derbies between the two sides have all ended as stalemates after 90 minutes, though Spain did win the most recent meeting between the two sides in a Nations League league phase match back in September 2022 in which Alvaro Morata scored a later winner in Braga.

Portugal haven’t beaten Spain in any of their last six meetings, and haven’t won a competitive Iberian derby since Nuno Gomes scored the winner in a Euro 2004 group game in Lisbon.
