Aston Villa vs Wolverhampton Wanderers predictions

Aston Villa fans are in dreamworld right now.

Around two years ago, the club found itself just outside the Premier League relegation zone. It was at that point, in October 2022, that the powers that be at Villa Park decided to replace manager Steven Gerrard with Unai Emery. That proved to be a masterstroke.

To say that Emery has done a magnificent job would be an understatement. After dragging Villa up to seventh place in 2022/23, he qualified them for the Champions League last term.

Would it be difficult for Villa to transfer their domestic form over to Europe’s premier competition? Not quite. A 3-0 victory over Young Boys on Tuesday means Villa are off to a flying start.

Granted, their Swiss opponents did not provide the sternest possible examination. Villa may yet be brought back down to earth by the likes of Bayern Munich, Juventus and RB Leipzig. Yet none of those teams will relish facing Emery’s men either.

Villa have also got out of the blocks quickly in the Premier League. A 2-0 defeat by Arsenal can be forgiven, not least because it was a close game.

That is the only blot on their copybook so far. Victories over West Ham United, Leicester City and Everton mean Villa head into the weekend in fifth place, level on points with Liverpool.

The consensus was that Emery’s charges would struggle to balance Premier League and Champions League commitments this season. That still might prove to be the case, but Villa have shown over the last few weeks that they remain a force to be reckoned with.

No one should rule them out of the race for the top four. There are still question marks surrounding the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. That trio may belong to the ‘so-called’ big six, but Villa were better than all of them last time out.

Next up is a home game against a Wolverhampton Wanderers team that has had much less to cheer about of late. Unsurprisingly, the bookies have Villa down as strong favourites to triumph in this all-West Midlands affair.

Aston Villa vs Wolves betting tips

Local bragging rights are on the line when Aston Villa host Wolves in the upcoming Premier League weekend.

Aston Villa to win and over 2.5 goals – 6/5 (SBK)

Wolves ended last season badly and Gary O’Neil may start to feel the pressure unless results pick up soon.

With home games against Liverpool and Manchester City on the horizon, Wolves will likely need to collect some points on the road if they are to climb out of the relegation zone any time soon.

It will be tough to get anything from this trip to Birmingham, however. Villa have the bit between their teeth and the home players will be full of confidence after last weekend’s comeback victory over Everton and the subsequent success in Switzerland.

There is a relentless quality to this Villa side when they are in the groove, and Wolves will find it difficult to halt their hosts.

Four of Villa’s five games this season have featured over 2.5 goals and we reckon this one will follow suit.

Back Aston Villa to win and over 2.5 goals at 6/5 with SBK

Aston Villa to win the second half – 5/6 (SBK)

Aston Villa started slowly against Everton and found themselves 2-0 down with less than half an hour on the clock.

Emery will want to see his team dominate the opening exchanges on Saturday, but it is more likely that Villa will come on strong later in the match.

Indeed, Wolves could have some success at keeping their opponents out early on.

O’Neil will set his team up to be difficult to break down, much as they were in the first half of last weekend’s 2-1 loss to Newcastle United.

But it will be tough for Wolves to hold out for 90 minutes, with Villa well positioned to take the game away from them after the break.

Go for an Aston Villa win in the second half at 5/6 with SBK

Jhon Duran to score any time – 2/1 (SBK)

Jhon Duran wanted to join West Ham United in the summer, but Aston Villa stood firm. They have spent the last few weeks thanking themselves for making that decision.

Duran has had a wonderful start to the season, scoring three goals despite not starting a single match. His strike against Everton last weekend was one of the best you will see in the Premier League all campaign.

Emery has so far resisted calls to play Duran up front with Ollie Watkins. When the former entered the fray in the Everton game, it was in place of the latter.

But after Watkins came off with an injury in the 3-0 win against Young Boys, Duran could be set to start up front alone this weekend.

That makes this wager look like fantastic value.

Tip Jhon Duran to score any time at 2/1 with SBK
