Daniel Ricciardo’s future remains in doubt after the Singapore Grand Prix but his emotional interview told a tale.
He finished 18th in his Visa Cash App Red Bull car, the last of all the finishing drivers.
Ricciardo battled tears as he spoke to the media post-raceFormula 1
It came as rumours swirled he would be replaced by Liam Lawson after the race.
No party is yet to confirm whether or not the Singapore event is his last.
However, plenty of clues looked to suggest it may well be the case.
After his drive, which ended with him snatching the fastest lap – earning himself a point – he remained in his cockpit for longer than usual.
Asked about the moment, battling tears, a misty-eyed Ricciardo explained the reason.
While taking deep breaths to compose himself, he said: “Yeah, a lot of emotions because, look, I’m aware it could be it.
“I think it’s also exhaustion after the race. There is just a flood of many emotions and feelings, and exhaustion.
“The cockpit is something that I got very used to for many years and I wanted to savour the moment.”
Ever the joker, Ricciardo’s fastest lap is something which could help friend Max Verstappen in the long run as he battles Lando Norris for the world championship.
And the Aussie, despite the emotion surrounding his drive, is hoping it can earn him something special.
In another interview he added: “In the end, we were not really in any position, so we tried to go for the fastest lap, and I guess it [could help] Max out by Abu Dhabi, maybe.
“Maybe there’s a Christmas present coming if he wins by one point,” he laughed.
