Newcastle’s Carabao Cup clash away at League Two side AFC Wimbledon has been postponed due to flooding.

Videos have circulated online of Plough Lane subject to significant flooding ahead of the previously scheduled third round clash on Tuesday night.

Heavy flooding on the pitch has meant that the pitch is not in a playable condition.

No rearranged date has yet been released for the match.

A statement from Wimbledon on X read: “We regret to inform fans that due to extensive overnight flooding of the River Wandle and surrounding areas, including at our stadium, our cup match tomorrow is postponed.”

A viral clip on Monday morning had sparked fear that the game would be pushed back with one corner seen in absolute tatters.

In one clip, one person filming on the pitch likened the state to a ‘golf course’ with the turf looking in shambolic state.

Fans were also quick to comment on the shocking condition of the pitch, as one joked: “Is that a mini golf course?”

Another user quipped: “The reveal not being Tiger Woods chipping one out of the bunker is a disappointment.”

A third added: “Looks like you need a sand wedge to play that hole.”

Extreme flooding was also visible in other parts of the stadium.

The Magpies meanwhile had also cancelled Eddie Howe’s pre-match press conference which was set to take place on Monday morning.

Both clubs have been in discussions over a rearranged clash for the League Cup tie.

There were even reports stating that Newcastle are open for the fixture to take place at St James’ Park instead.

Though that always seemed to be a near impossibility given the safety measures that would need to be taken, along with ticketing for the clash.

But it remains to be seen when the third round tie could go ahead with Wimbledon in midweek action away at Accrington Stanley next week.

It means that both clubs will be in the hat when the draw for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup takes place on Wednesday evening.

Matches for the next round are scheduled to take place on the week commencing October 28.

Newcastle boss Howe had only recently discussed the importance of his side’s clash with Wimbledon in the club’s search for silverware.

He said: “Wimbledon is a massive game for us. We are under no illusions on that.

“It is a competition we want to do well in. But we want to build momentum in our season.

“First and foremost we want to produce a really good performance.

“So we know the onus is on us to deliver in this game.”
