Group 1 action at Newmarket takes centre stage on Saturday with a top class support card that includes a mightily competitive renewal of the Cambridgeshire.
The Group 1 races on the card are for the juveniles with the fillies’ in the Cheveley Park and the colts in the Middle Park Stakes.
We have picked out selections for all of the races on ITV this Saturday including an each-way value play in the Cambridgeshire.
1.15 Newmarket – 7f British Stallion Studs EBF ‘Jersey Lily’ Fillies’ Nursery Handicap (Class 2) (2yo)
A nursery kicks off Newmarket’s card and it looks like a good opportunity for Ghost Run to gain back-to-back wins.
This daughter of Kameko was backed off the boards before landing a competitive race at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting a couple of weeks ago and, if she handles the softer ground, she could be hard to stop from just a 5lb higher handicap mark.
Selection: Ghost Run @ 7/2
1.50 Newmarket – 1m Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes (Group 2) (Colts & Geldings) (Class 1) (2yo)
Wimbledon Hawkeye is clear on ratings for this Group 2 contest but at a bigger price, Royal Playwright might be worth chancing. This Lope De Vega colt won in impressive fashion at Salisbury on debut, an effort worth marking up having been made to wait for a run at a crucial stage before powering clear.
The yard’s runners often come on markedly for their first outing but not much went right for this juvenile second time out. Having been keen early due to some interference leaving the stalls at Sandown, he didn’t quite get home, but there’s every chance that this step up in trip will suit (sire, dam and half-brothers all stayed further) and owner Jeff Smith won this contest with Ghostwriter last year.
Selection: Royal Playwright @ 13/2
2.25 Newmarket – 6f Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes (Group 1) (Fillies) (Class 1) (2yo)
Babouche comes into this contest unbeaten and she could take some stopping with the form of her latest success at the Curragh getting a significant boost from Whistlejacket (runs in Middle Park Stakes) subsequently in France, landing a Group 1.
She’s proven to some extent with cut in the ground having won on good to yielding on debut and if she continues on her upward trajectory, she could be hard to beat.
Selection: Babouche @ 7/4
3.00 Newmarket – 6f Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes (Group 1) (Colts) (Class 1) (2yo)
Whistlejacket showed a really good attitude when making all in a Group 2 on the July course here earlier in the season and he gained compensation for a narrow loss to Babouche when winning a Deauville Group 1 in good style subsequently.
He seems to relish testing conditions and he sets a clear standard in his bid for another Group 1.
Selection: Whistlejacket @ 4/6
3.40 Newmarket – 1m1f Cambridgeshire (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) (3yo+)
A typically competitive renewal of this race and with plenty of places on offer, it’s worth taking a chance on one at a price.
Bopedro gives the impression that he’ll be well suited to a big field with plenty of pace on and it often pays to be drawn high in this contest, so he appears to be on the right side with stall 22.
Danny Tudhope opts for him over some interesting stablemates and this eight-year-old is officially 3lb well in here after returning to form with a narrow defeat at Leopardstown earlier this month.
Selection: Bopedro @ 12/1
