Raphael Varane has been appointed as a board member of Serie A outfit Como in his first official role since retiring.

The Frenchman joined the Italian side after leaving Manchester United this summer, but played just 23 minutes for the club after picking up a knee injury.

He then decided to hang up his boots in September, and has now taken on a role behind the scenes.

On Saturday, Como announced Varane would become a board member, advising on ‘youth development, education and product innovation’.

The club’s statement read: “Como 1907 is pleased to announce the appointment of Raphaël Varane as a board member.

“Recently retired from professional football, Varane will bring his experience and leadership to this new role, marking the next chapter of his career off the pitch.

“Varane will collaborate with Osian Roberts, Como 1907’s Head of Development, and Juliette Bolon, Head of the Education Program, to support the club’s youth development efforts.

“His involvement will benefit not only the players but also the broader community through educational initiatives.”

Varane will join Arsenal legend and Como stakeholder Thierry Henry in helping to build the club off the pitch, while another ex-Premier League star, Cesc Fabregas, leads the club from the sidelines as manager.

The 31-year-old Frenchman said: “Being a top-level sportsman comes with joy, sacrifice, and the constant drive to push beyond limits. Throughout my career, I’ve been motivated by a desire to improve and strive for excellence.

“Transitioning from the field to the boardroom isn’t the end of my football journey; it’s a new beginning that I’m looking forward to. Joining the board of Como allows me to continue contributing to the sport while shaping its future.”

He added: “This new phase of my career feels like a second birth, not an ending. I’m not saying goodbye to football.

“Joining the Como 1907 Development Committee excites me, and I look forward to being part of an ambitious project that resonates with my values.

“Together, we will invest in youth development, expand educational opportunities, and innovate product solutions to bring the club’s vision to life.”

Varane left Old Trafford after his contract expired at the end of last season.

He joined the Red Devils from Real Madrid in July 2021. He had previously played for Lens, the club he made his senior debut with.

Varane also racked up 93 caps for France in his career, scoring five goals and winning the World Cup in 2018.

Como FC were promoted to the top flight last term and currently sit 14th in the table.
