Hindsight is 20/20, and Dan Campbell has perfect vision.

The Detroit Lions head coach went for it on fourth down on their own 31-yard-line, up 24-21 on the Green Bay Packers.

The Packers stuffed the Lions and went on to score to take the lead 28-24 with the short field.

Broadcaster Kirk Herbstreit didn’t have a problem with the call, referencing that’s just who Campbell is.

“It’s easy to say, ‘What the heck is he doing, deep in his own territory?’

“But listen, you live by the sword, you die by the sword.”

Herbstreit went on to point out the three previous fourth down conversions that the Lions were successful in converting.

“He’s living up to what he does. You can’t question it when he does it and it works.”

His partner in the booth, legendary play-by-play voice Al Michaels, cautioned the fine line that Campbell often toes.

“Yeah, a thin line between genius and bum.”

Herbstreit and Michaels are both right.

This is what’s made Campbell and the Lions so successful.

They take the risks, and more often than not, it pays off.

But when it doesn’t, you end up looking like a clown.

Or as Michaels said, a bum.

But when it does, you look like a genius.

As Campbell did on the Lions last drive, going for it on 4th and inches to effectively run the clock all the way down and kick the chip shot field goal.

The Lions didn’t have to go for it, they could have just kicked it on 4th down with time remaining giving Green Bay’s Jordan Love a chance.

Instead, Campbell does what he does best.

He went for it and they got it.

The Lions kicked the field goal as time expired.

Detroit 31, Green Bay 28. Game over.

The Lions have won a franchise record 11 games in a row, and improve to 12-1 overall.

It’s a thin line, and Dan Campbell isn’ scared of it one bit.
