Abubaker Lawal: Vipers Nigerian footballer dies

Vipers SC Nigerian midfielder Abubaker Lawal has passed on aged 30, the club has confirmed.

Lawal joined the Venoms from Rwanda’s AS Kigali in July 2022 and won the league and Uganda Cup in the 2022/23 season.

Despite reports of an accident, the cause of his death remains a mystery with the club confirming a postmortem will be conducted.

We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved player, Abubakar Lawal, who left us this morning.

He’s body has been transferred to a medical facility for postmortem examination.

Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lawal’s family, club fans, friends and loved ones during this difficult time. Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.”

Tributes on social media

Nation Media journalists Elvis Senono posted: “Nigerian Abubakar Lawal will always be remembered for scoring Vipers’ first goal in the group stages of the Caf Champions League….it brought so much joy to the fans. RIP”

The Observer and NBS Sport’s John Vianney Nsimbe tweeted: “It is so sad to learn of the passing of Abubaker Lawal. My heartfelt condolences to the Vipers family for losing their player in such a tragic manner. The few times I talked to Lawal, I found him quite warm and welcoming. That makes his passing such a hard thing to accept.”

KOSA League outgoing chairperson Hassan Hood, also a Vipers fan wrote on X. “You always told me ‘Hajji we are going to win in life. You told me how your friends in Nigeria followed the Kosa League. The Daily Duas we have always had after match days. Ya Allah, The Quran Lessons.”
