Just a few weeks ago, it looked like Paulo Fonseca’s tenure as AC Milan manager would be one of the shortest in the club’s history.
Ahead of a home game against Venezia in the middle of September, Fonseca was warned by the supporters that things had to change – or else. His side had taken just two points from the first nine available in Serie A, leaving Milan towards the bottom of the table.
Thankfully for the Portuguese, his team ran out 4-0 winners against Venezia that day. They then beat arch-rivals Inter the following weekend and have now triumphed in four of their last five league games.
That uptick in form has lifted Milan up to fourth place, where just five points separate them from the early pace-setters Napoli. Fonseca is suddenly in the fans’ good books.
However, there is significant room for improvement in the Champions League, where Milan rank 32nd out of 36 after two rounds of fixtures.
Back-to-back defeats by Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen have left the Rossoneri with ground to make up as they bid to finish in the top 24 of the league phase.
There is no shame in losing to either of those opponents, both of whom are considered contenders for the trophy, but Milan cannot afford to make it three winless games in a row when Club Brugge come to town.
It is time for Fonseca’s side to carry their domestic form over to the continental stage, where a trip to Real Madrid awaits on matchday four. With that game looming on the horizon, it is not an exaggeration to call this a must-win encounter for Milan.
Club Brugge were soundly beaten 3-0 by Borussia Dortmund in their first match of the 2024/25 Champions League, but they ground out a 1-0 away win at Sturm Graz last time out.
That has raised spirits at the Jan Breydel Stadium, but realistically it will be extremely tough for Brugge to qualify for the knockout phase play-offs in the revamped tournament.
