Jack Nicklaus is remarkably quoted; “A kid grows up a lot faster on the golf course.”
Golf courses are safe spaces in urban and semi-urban centers where there aren’t many community centers.
Therefore, AFRIYEA Golf Academy views golf courses as places of learning, creating friendships, and fostering development for children, especially during long school breaks.
The Academy nurtures children in golf both in schools and holidays, and for the November, December 2024, and January 2025 holiday golf program held at Toro Golf Club in Fort Portal, Western Uganda.
It has recruited 47 junior golfers into the holiday golf program to learn all the fundamentals of the game, life skills, and sustainability.
The academy, vividly linked to integrating education and sustainability with sports, welcomed 47 juniors to the three-month tailored holiday program for the children.
Among them were 33 boys, 14 girls, and two players with disabilities—a testament to the program’s inclusive approach.
Participants spanned a wide age range: 3–6 years had 2 juniors, 7–12 had 28 juniors, 13–16 had 12 juniors, and 17+ years had 5 juniors.
The program aims to do more than teach the mechanics of a golf swing.
As George Kituku, the academy’s assistant head coach, explained, the academy’s vision extends beyond the sport itself;
Golf is more than just a game; it’s a tool for character building. Our goal is to provide a safe, nurturing space where children can improve their skills, form lasting friendships, and develop values like discipline and perseverance. Watching their progress, both on and off the course, has been incredibly rewarding.

Kituku further highlights the program’s emphasis on mental and emotional growth, pointing out that golf teaches patience, focus, and resilience—qualities that are essential for success in life.
A Parent’s Perspective
Diana Komungaro whose 10-year-old son has been part of the program for one year, spoke passionately about the impact the academy has had on her children’s growth:
Before joining AFRIYEA Golf Academy, my sons were a bit shy and hesitant to try new things. Now, they are brimming with confidence, not just in golf but in school and at home. The academy has given them more than skills; it’s given them a sense of purpose and belonging.

The Children confess:
For many of the young participants, the program has become a highlight of their year. Ten-year-old Jethro Ayebale shared his excitement about the daily lessons:
“I love coming here because I learn new tricks every day. Golf is so much fun, and I’ve made many friends. Coach George says I’m improving a lot, and that makes me happy!”
Aldrine Isingoma and Kato Alvine, who are twins, added:
“We like how we all play together and learn together. The game of golf makes us feel special and strong.” Isingoma reveals.
A Broader vision
The academy’s CEO, Isaiah Mwesige, emphasized the broader mission of the program:
AFRIYEA Golf Academy believes golf is a powerful sport that transcends personal and social transformation. Our mission is to empower children to become well-rounded individuals who can positively impact their communities. By teaching life skills, promoting sustainability, and instilling values of leadership and integrity, we are not just producing skilled golfers; we are shaping future leaders and agents of change who can make the world a better place.
Isaiah Mwesige, CEO AFRIYEA Golf Academy
Mwesige added that holiday programs are an excellent opportunity for children to connect, network with their peers, and grow mentally and physically.
Projection:
The holiday program, which started in November 2024, will come to an end on January 31, 2025.
Upon the conclusion of this program, the academy will also resume its school golf program.
AFRIYEA Golf Academy is not only redefining the role of sports in child development but also inspiring a new wave of enthusiasm for golf in Uganda.
With its focus on inclusivity, sustainability, and personal growth, the academy is not just producing skilled golfers; it is cultivating a generation of visionary leaders and change-makers who will carry the lessons of the game far beyond the greens.
