Akena caps up memorable year with success at inaugural Godfrey Nsubuga invitational tourney

1st Godfrey Nsubuga Invitational Golf Championship

Joseph Reagan Akena capped up a memorable 2024 with victory at the first ever Godfrey Nsubuga Invitational golf championship played on the newly opened Lugazi Hills and country club course.

The reigning Uganda amateur open champion recorded victory over a pool of 30 top gross players in the country for yet another magnificent win at his own backyard course.

Akena scored 9-under-135 (gross) in 36 holes action played over two rounds.

He opened with a magical 5-under 67 mark and slid by a shot to 4-under 68 during round two.

“I am happy for this victory once again” the soft spoken long distance hitter remarked.

“I am humbled for my brother Godfrey Nsubuga who invited us for such a tournament with prizes and cash. This is a great gesture to pay back to the game” Akena who earned a trophy and cash worthy Ug.Shs 1,300,000 added.

Akena scored 12 birdies, 19 pars and 5 bogies over the grueling 36 holes’ action, a week after a top 10 finish at the 2024 Nyali open in Mombasa.

This year alone, Akena has been successful in a number of tournaments including the Uganda amateur open, Lugazi open, Mbale open, Kakira open, Kileleesi Kwachwa grand finale and lately the Nsubuga invitational championship.

Uganda national team captain Joseph Cwinya-ai played an even 68 and 68 for a combined 8-under total gross mark of 136.

Third place went to the fast improving James Madira for 75 and 67 (142) whilst Titus OKwong came fourth with 71 and 72 (143) and Entebbe based Elton Tembo finished fifth with 73 and 71 (144).

The best junior overall was Joel Okoth with 74, 76 (150).

The tournament was organized by US based Ugandan golfer Godfrey Nsubuga who won the amateur national title in 2023.

The prize giving ceremony was graced by the Chief Executive of Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited N.J Paul and Nsubuga’s mother.
