Akena’s 2024 fine-form continues with Kakira/CFAO Golf Open win in Jinja

Joseph Reagan Akena has had a golden year (2024) thus far.

After clinching the 2024 Uganda Amateur Golf open championship, Akena added onto the brave performances for the national team in the Africa Region IV (Rwanda) and All Africa championships (Zimbabwe).

The latest great displays have been at the Equity Naro Open in Namulonge with second finish and the Kakira/ CFAO victory in Jinja city.

Akena amassed a total of 218 gross in 54 holes to emerge victorious at the River side 9-hole golfing facility.

Golf action in Jinja

The Lugazi Hills and country club member played 74, 75 and 69 in three rounds, coming a shot better than Jinja club’s Sande Lulet (73, 77, 69).

“I am happy for the victory and it gives me the momentum going ahead in further competitions” Akena who took the bulk of Ug.Shs 1,000,000 for the amateurs remarked.

Titus Okwong (220), Ibrahim Bagalana (225), Anthony Otukei (228), Phillip Kasango (230), Joseph Kanonera (230), Juma Abiti (234), Ibra Ssemakula (238) and Andrew Muwanguzi (239) completed the ten positions.

In the professional category, Opio Onito won with a total of 140 (Gross), ahead of Canary Kabise (144).

Onito pocketed the biggest percentage of the Ug.Shs 6,000,000 of the prize money kitty.

Group winners:

In men group A, Robert Kato won by countback victory of 71 nett over Phillip Kasango.

Bernard Walimbwa was runners up with 73 nett.

Bernard Mayo (69 nett) won the men group B. Faisal Mulindwa and Martin Tumuheki both scored 70 nett but the former had an edge on countback to take second place.

Bernard Amwine scored 68 nett to win group C men, Micheal Andama came second second with 71 nett and Israel Fenie scored 72 nett.

Ladies:

In the female gender, Joyce Kisembo scored 71 nett to topple the rest in group B.

Joan Nampewo beat Martha Babirye to second place in the same pool by countback rule after both golfers had scored 72 nett.

Sharon Kawanyi was the winner in ladies group B with 64 nett. Joy Mirembe (71 nett) came second and Robin Kohler was third with 73 nett (countback).

Seniors:

In the senior’s category; Jerom Adutu (72 nett) won for men with Catherine Pavie (73 nett) winning the ladies’ section of golfers above 55 years.

Side-bets:

Longest drive:

On hole, the longest drive contest was won by Bernard Mbayo and Meron Kyomugisha.

The nearest to the pin on hole 9 was taken by Sam Hopper and Loganathan Harshi

Piga mingi scores were recorded by Loganathan S (101 nett) and Gloria Nakato (94 nett).

The tournament was supported by Kakira Sugar, CFAO Motors, Jinja Club and other stakeholders.
