Joseph Reagan Akena is the man of the moment in Uganda’s golf circles for the year 2024.

Weeks after triumphing in his own backyard during the Kakira championship at the newly opened Lugazi hills and country club course, Akena has maintained the status quo.

The long hitting handicap 1 player easily beat a host of professionals and top gross players at the 2024 Kileleesi grand Kwacha.

Akena completed the three legs (Kigo, Kampala and Entebbe) with 212 nett score (-3) ahead of second placed Phillip Kasozi (216).

“This was sweet victory. After I opened with an Eagle on hole one in Entebbe, I knew I had an advantage over the opposition and held on” Akena who has now won four titles this year revealed.

During the opening leg held at Lake Victoria Golf Resort and Spa, Akena struck level par-72.

He improved to 2-under-70 during the leg at Uganda Golf Club, Kampala and powerfully completed the series 4-under-67 at the lake side Entebbe club.

“This has been an eventful year. I thank my family, the Lugazi Hills and Country club management, my personal management team, teammates and the Uganda Golf Union for all the support” Akena who partook a lion’s share of the Ug.Shs 9.6M prize fund acknowledged.

This year alone, Akena has smiled to the podium as victor at the Mbale Open, Tanna Memorial Open (Tororo), Uganda Amateur Open championship, Kakira Open (Jinja), Mehta Open (Lugazi) and now the Kileleesi Grand Kwacha local tour.

He was runners up thrice in Jinja (Jinja Open), Equity NARO open and the Limuru open in Kenya.

 Globally, Akena is currently positioned 179th out of 4926 rated golfers with an accumulative 649.7 points on the world amateur golf ranking.

Meanwhile, the final leg in Entebbe was set alight by an eye-catching hole-in-one shot by David “Amooti” Kamulindwa on the par-3 hole 16, using a titlist 6-Iron PXG Pro V 1X club on the sunny afternoon.

Meanwhile, two amateurs Walter Tukahirwa and Isaac Holly Ogwal tied in third place with 218.

Tadeo Rodel Gaita finished fifth with 219 over the three legs.

Ronald Otile (220), Lawrence Walakira (220), Alex Kasendwa (222), Titus Okwong (222) and Joseph Cwinya-ai (223) complete the top ten positions.

A total of 39 golfers (professionals and amateurs) took part in this championship that was started in May 2024.

Uganda Golf Union president Dr Jackson Were who graced the official prize giving ceremony at the grand Kwacha tournament was impressed by the initiative and vowed to accord the necessary support.

“The Kileleesi Kwachwa tournament is a perfect competitive tournament. As the Uganda Golf Union, we shall give such a tournament that helps our golfers keep in competitive shape all the necessary support going forward” Dr Were revealed amid applause from the members.

A cross section of partners joined hands to make the Kileleesi Kwacha golf tour a success.

Munig Engineering Solutions Limited, Ekspreso, City Tyres, Uganda Golf Union, Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa, Uganda Golf Club and Entebbe Club all combined efforts.
