Overlooking the famous Ngetta Hills in Lira city, Northern Uganda is the spacious piece of land (45.60 arces) designated for the state of art Akii Bua Olympic Stadium.
The skyline in the area will never remain the same again with upcoming gigantic project of a sports 20,000-seater stadium.
The grueling construction process for this stadium was officially launched by the head of state H.E General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Wednesday, 29th January 2025 before a mammoth crowd.
Accompanied by the First Lady who also doubles as the Minister of Education and Sports Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni, the president laid the foundation stone
The stadium is one of the facilities ear-marked for the upcoming AFCON 2027 tournament that will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
People sometimes claim that this Government is ineffective, that we often overlook the importance of sports. As both a sportsman and a footballer, I understand that focusing on sports was challenging during the country’s rebuilding phase. This was especially true during the times of unrest and football shortages (Cham), which left many people poor and hungry. We recognize the value of sports, but we had to progress step by step; after all, Kamu Kamu gwe muganda (one by one makes a bundle).

The project is estimated to cost $129 million project (about four hundred seventy-five billion, six hundred fifteen million, three hundred ninety thousand Ugandan Shillings (UGX 475, 615, 390, 000/=).
This project is expected to be completed within 20 months.
The groundbreaking ceremony was also graced by other government officials and sports stakeholders from the National Council of Sports as well as other ministries.
The stadium, once completed, is expected to significantly boost sports development in the region and honor the legacy of Uganda’s first Olympic gold medalist, John Akii Bua.
The state-of-the-art facility will accommodate 20,000 spectators and include a main stadium, training facilities, an indoor arena, a swimming pool, outdoor courts, and ample parking.
The Ugandan government signed a contract for the project in June last year with Egyptian firm SAMCO National Construction Company.
Lira City is expected to benefit significantly from the project, with an anticipated boost in tourism, job creation, and economic development.
The Akii Bua Olympic Stadium will be a landmark facility, fostering talent development and positioning Uganda as a host for regional and international sporting events.
Museveni has been on a tour of the Lango Subregion to assess the progress of the Parish Development Model, and the stadium project is seen as a major infrastructure boost for the area.
Besides the on-going constructions at the Hoima City Stadium, the Mandela National Stadium and Hamz stadium (Nakivubo) are already completed.
The Government has bold plans to upgrade other stadia in regional cities of Masaka, Fort Portal, Gulu, Mbale and Arua.
