Alan Pardew lifted the lid on THAT infamous headbutt on Hull City’s David Meyler during a Premier League game in 2014.

Former Newcastle boss Pardew was handed a seven-match suspension for the incident that took place next to the Magpies’ dugout during a 4-1 victory at Hull.

Pardew was given a three-game stadium ban followed by a four-match touchline suspension and fined a whopping £60,000 by the Football Association.

Then Newcastle owner Mike Ashley also slapped him with a £100,00 fine.

Recalling the incident, Pardew admits to being ‘sucked in’ by the Republic of Ireland international who ran over to get the ball to take a throw-in quickly close to where the former Magpies boss was standing.

The pair then clashed leading to Pardew leaning into Meyler with his head.

“Meyler sucked me in there he was very clever,” Pardew told talkSPORT.

“He kicked me as the ball was running out of play and then on the way back I was giving him a few verbals and he sort of came towards me and I put my head into his head.

“It wasn’t actually a headbutt but when you look at the footage but the media went mental, I had nowhere to go.

“I accepted the charge and Mike Ashley fined me £100,000 straight away to make a stance on it – and that was without the fine from the FA!

“It was an expensive situation and I served my time.”

The former Crystal Palace and Charlton star was excruciatingly forced to watch the next three games away from the stadium, the first of which, he took in from the confines of a hotel room.

“I had to sit in a hotel room and watch the game because I couldn’t be on the sideline which was really painful as well,” he adde.

“It was Chelsea we played and I was in a hotel room at the Royal Garden watching it on TV.

“Can you imagine how frustrated? I was running around the room going mental on my own.”

Looking back, Pardew concedes that he should not have become embroiled in the scuffle with Meyler considering his side were in the ascendancy.

“To be fair, it was a situation where I should have done a lot better than I did,” he said. “We were winning the game. We were 3-1 up I think at the time so it wasn’t like I was seething mad.

Asked about the reaction of the Newcastle squad to the outburst, Pardew said: “Most of them giggled at me and said ‘what are you doing gaffer, you’ve got yourself in trouble now.’

“They quite enjoyed it I think, in a sort of weird way. We won, if we’d have lost it might have been different.”

Jim White then asked if he had made up with Meyler, and Pardew added: “I’ve not seen him since.

“I don’t think I’d shake his hand and say ‘how are you?’ I’d probably just nod in his way and say ‘okay, well done’.

“I’m pretty sure he went back into the dressing room and say ‘I sucked him in right there’.”
