Real Madrid’s 3-0 defeat by Arsenal on Tuesday has left the whole club deflated. But there is no time for the Blancos to feel sorry for themselves. Madrid have a La Liga title to fight for.

Can Carlo Ancelotti’s team get up for this trip to Alaves, or will their opponents cause a major surprise against the reigning Spanish champions?

Alaves vs Real Madrid predictions

Real Madrid do not lose by three goals in the Champions League very often. The 15-time kings of the continent are not used to being dismantled on the stage they believe belongs to them. Yet that is exactly what happened to Madrid – the reigning champions, no less – on Tuesday.

Arsenal were sensational that night, as a Declan Rice free-kick double and a smart finish from Mikel Merino gave them a 3-0 victory over Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

Madrid can never be written off in Europe, but it is not an exaggeration to say that Arsenal have one foot in the semi-finals of the Champions League ahead of Wednesday’s second leg.

Madrid’s season does not yet lie in tatters. As well as their European endeavours, the Blancos remain in the mix for the La Liga title.

If they are not careful, however, Madrid could have only the Copa del Rey left to play for in a week’s time (they face Barcelona in the final later this month). And despite everything he has already won at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, a trophyless season not end well for Ancelotti.

It is not just the Arsenal defeat that has cast a dark cloud over Madrid. They were also beaten last weekend, going down 2-1 at home to Valencia. Barcelona already had the initiative in the title race, but Madrid’s surprise defeat pushed their arch-rivals ever closer to their goal.

There is still time for Ancelotti’s charges to turn things around. Barcelona were unable to take full advantage of Madrid’s slip-up, drawing 1-1 with Real Betis the following day. The gap between the pair now stands at four points – significant but not insurmountable, especially with a Clasico still to come.

Madrid cannot afford any more mistakes in the run-in, though. Athletic Bilbao are their opponents next weekend and the Basque side are capable of causing Madrid one or two problems. Before that, the champions must emerge unscathed from their trip to Vitoria-Gasteiz.

Alaves are fighting for their top-flight lives. They go into the weekend in 17th place, just two points above the drop zone. They will battle for every ball against Madrid, who could be distracted by the return game against Arsenal.

“We lacked football,” Ancelotti said after Tuesday’s setback. They must find it again this weekend.

Alaves vs Real Madrid betting tips

Can Real Madrid get their La Liga title bid back on track by overcoming Alaves this weekend?

Real Madrid to win

Alaves have shown a few signs of life of late. A record of two wins and two draws in their last five games has lifted them from 19th to above the dreaded dotted line.

It will be tough for Alaves to avoid defeat in this one, however. They are facing a wounded animal in Real Madrid, who will be determined to reassert their credentials on Saturday.

Ancelotti’s side were poor against Arsenal, but they were unfortunate to lose to Valencia a few days prior.

Madrid racked up an xG of 3.47 that day while giving up just 0.78. It was a bad result but it was not a particularly bad performance.

Alaves have undoubtedly improved in their last few games, but Madrid should get the job done one way or another.

Alaves under 0.5 goals

Alaves have scored 33 goals this season. It is hardly a huge amount, but six sides have found the back of the net less often.

However, exactly two-thirds of their strikes have come on the road. That means Alaves have scored just 11 times on home turf this season, the second-lowest tally in the division.

Alaves’ matches at their home ground of Mendizorrotza tend to be low-scoring. Luis Garcia’s side are adept at making life difficult for their visitors.

The problem is, that defensive resilience usually comes at the expense of their attacking output – and that could be the case again this weekend.

Brahim Diaz to score or assist

Ancelotti is bound to make a few changes for Saturday’s game with one eye on the second instalment of the Arsenal tie.

Brahim Diaz tends to benefit from the Real Madrid’s manager rotation ahead of Champions League games. Indeed, he started against Valencia before dropping to the bench at the Emirates Stadium.

The former Manchester City man has been a useful squad player this season, filling in in a few different roles depending on the needs of the team.

He has had 10 direct goal involvements across La Liga and the Champions League, which works out as one every 162 minutes – not bad for a player who has been in and out of the team.
