Ange Postecoglou vowed to win a trophy with Tottenham this season after his side’s derby day loss to Arsenal.

The Gunners retained north London bragging rights with a 1-0 win on Sunday, as Gabriel rose highest to head home from a corner to take all three points and create history.

Despite being on the losing side, Postecoglou was defiant in his post-match interview.

However, there was more than an element of spikiness in his response to the defeat as spoke to Sky Sports’ Emma Saunders.

The Australian was asked about his statement at the start of the season that his second campaign at a club often sees him win silverware, and whether he had seen enough in this side to believe them capable of doing that.

As Saunders got her question across, she pulled the mic back twice to add to it before she heard Postecoglou’s answer.

In response, the Spurs boss said with a smile on his face: “Am I going to answer the question, or are you going to keep asking?”

He continued: “No absolutely and I think I’ll correct myself and say that I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second year.

“I don’t say things unless I believe it.

“Nothing has changed.”

Quizzed on whether he was confident he could do it with his current Spurs side, Postecoglou stayed firm.

“Well, I sort of said it now,” he said. “I don’t say things unless I believe them.”

The ex-Celtic manager took over at Tottenham as Antonio Conte’s permanent replacement last summer, signing a four-year contract.

The 59-year-old led Spurs to a fifth place finish last term.

After Sunday’s loss, they sit 13th in the league four games into the campaign.

He won silverware with Celtic, sealing the Scottish Premiership title and the Scottish League Cup in 2022 and 2023, as well as the Scottish Cup in 2023 – his second and third years in charge.

Postecoglou also addressed his comments on not being worried over Spurs’ set pieces coming into focus again after conceding from a corner against Arsenal.

Speaking post-match, he said: “I haven’t brought in a set-piece coach but people can run any kind of fairytale they want about me.

“Everything I say has kind of turned into something else. 

“I thought we handled set-pieces okay today, but they’re always a threat and we switched off for one.

“Whether it’s a set piece or in general play, if you switch off you’re going to pay a price against good teams and that happened today.”
