Amateur, Pro golfers keen for Lugazi Sugar centenary tourney at newly designed facility

It is this opportune time as the vivid countdown to the climax of the year is aggressively on.

The events on the calendar for most sports disciplines are also winding down.

On the golf front, this weekend is very special. There are two golfing events on the world amateur ranking system that will take center stage in Uganda at Lugazi and Masindi.

Apparently, both events are organized by sugar manufacturing plants; Lugazi Sugar for the Lugazi championship and Kinyara Sugar Works for the Masindi tournament.

Lugazi Hills and Country Club golf course

After close to half a decade of redesign, upgrade from 9 holes and renovation, golf returns to the rolling hills of Lugazi with vigour.

The Lugazi Hills Golf and Country Club is located midway 40 KM east of the capital, Kampala and West from the source of the Nile city, JInja.

Golfers (gross cluster, professionals and the subsidiaries) have this special moment to play on this captivating golf 18-hole-par-71 golf amenity with a new layout which measures to a total distance of 6,759 yards, rolling through the picturesque hills and valleys with breathe-taking iconic view and definitely challenges.

On this course, golfers (experienced and the newcomers) will need strategic and calculative play as the numerous bunkers are well placed with water hazards and undulating greens.

Joseph Cwinyaai

“I look forward a great championship in Lugazi. This is a great course and we know it is challenging but ready to approach it.I have lately practiced there with the national team camp and ready for action” Joseph Cwinya-ai, the Uganda national team captain remarks.

Cwinya-ai is among the top gross players ready to compete for the 54-hole action and will compete for the Ug.Shs 10,000,000 reserved for the top five.

He faces stiff competition from home bred talents led by Joseph Reagan Akena, the reigning Uganda Amateur Open champion.

Other top gross players include Titus Okwong, Juma Abiti, Michael Tumusiime, Peter Tumusiime, Elton Thembo, Joseph Kasozi and others.

Among the professionals expected to compete will be the home professional Ronald “King” Bukenya, Phillip Kasozi, Abraham Ainamani, David Kamulindwa, Adolf Muhumuza and others.

The professionals’ kitty is also Ug.Shs 10,000,000.

The new layout of the course has five tee-boxes for each hole with blue (professionals), white, red and yellow. The other tee-box is for junior golfers (kids).

There two new fairways introduced for the 427-yards par-4 hole no.6, heading to the highest point on this golf course, 184-yard par-3 hole no.7.

Golfers will also have the unique experience to encounter the longest 702-yards par 5-hole no.15, the farest in the whole of Africa.

The Lugazi Hills and Country Club course has beautiful gardens, different tree species, water bodies, animals (peacocks) and artistic statues most of them depicting the life of the Buddha, built within the golf course for the enjoyment of both golfers and non-golfers accompanying players.

To ensure an eventful and memorable championship; the management of Sugar Corporation of Uganda Limited (SCOUL) has facilitated the bulk of the monies.

Mandela Group of Companies under the City Tyres brand has come as the main sponsor.

Basco Paints is among the other co-sponsors.

The green fees are fixed at Ug.Shs 90,000 (professionals and gross players) with Ug.Shs 50,000 for the subsidiary golfers.
