Arsenal v Real Madrid prediction

Arsenal will be looking to get back to winning ways tonight for the first leg of their Champions League quarter final against defending champions Real Madrid, having been held to a 1-1 draw by Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday lunchtime.

The point on Merseyside saw Mikel Arteta’s side close the gap on Premier League leaders to 11 points, though is likely to be too little too late in the club’s bid for a first league title in 21 years.

The Gunners are unbeaten in their last seven matches in all competitions, though have only won three of those, ahead of the visit of the 15-time champions of Europe tonight, with the north London side looking to reach the semi finals of the Champions League for the first time in 16 years.

The London side booked their place in the last eight of this season’s competition by emphatically beating Dutch side PSV in the Round of 16, 9-3 on aggregate after winning the first leg 7-1 in Eindhoven having finished third in the league phase.

Real Madrid head to the English capital having fallen to a surprise defeat at home against Valencia on Saturday afternoon, which now leaves them four points behind league leaders Barcelona in their bid to win back-to-back league titles for the first time in 17 years.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side are now winless in their last two matches having drawn 4-4 after extra time in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi final clash with Real Sociedad at the Bernabeu.

Los Blancos have faced an unorthodox route to the quarter finals of this season’s Champions League by their lofty standards having finished the league phase down in 11th place having lost three of their eight matches.

The Spanish side have had to knock out both Manchester City and Atletico Madrid in order to reach the last eight, needing a penalty shoot out in the last round to see off their city rivals.

Surprisingly the two sides have only met each other on two occasions before, coming in the Round of 16 of this competition back in 2006, when the Gunners won 1-0 on aggregate thanks to a Thierry Henry goal in the first leg at the Bernabeu en route to reaching the final.

Neither team are in particularly fantastic form heading into tonight’s huge game, though Real Madrid’s experience in big games and having home advantage in the second leg probably stands them in better stead, leaving tonight’s game a must win for Arsenal.

The Gunners will likely go gung ho tonight but I expect Madrid’s quality and know-how to keep them firmly in the tie – I’m expecting a 1-1 draw in tonight’s first leg.

Arsenal v Real Madrid bet builder

1-1 draw, Bukayo Saka to score, Real Madrid to receive over 1.5 cards – 45/1 with bet365

Bukayo Saka is Arsenal’s second highest goal scorer this season despite having missed the last three and a half months of the season through a hamstring injury, returning to action with a goal off the best against Fulham in the Gunners’ last home game.

The England winger has scored four goals in his last four Champions League games, and was rested on Saturday afternoon in preparation for tonight’s big game.

Real Madrid have received more yellow cards than any other side in the Champions League this season, averaging more than 2.4 per game so far.
