Arsenal vs PSV predictions

Arsenal were on cloud nine after a remarkable 7-1 demolition of PSV last week, but they were promptly brought back down to earth on Sunday.

The Gunners were surely already out of the Premier League title race before their meeting with Manchester United, but a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford was in effect the final nail in the coffin.

Arsenal were on top in the first half against Ruben Amorim’s struggling Red Devils, but they struggled to turn possession into clear-cut chances and then fell behind to a Bruno Fernandes free-kick.

Declan Rice levelled for the Gunners late on, but it was a disappointing outcome given how poor United have been for some time now.

Fifteen points adrift of Liverpool at the summit of the standings, it is safe to say the title will not be heading to the Emirates Stadium this campaign.

Out of the EFL Cup and the FA Cup, the Champions League thus represents Arsenal’s last chance of silverware this season.

Although the club’s desperation to win a first Premier League title since 2004 is palpable, a Champions League triumph would arguably be a greater achievement.

This is a tournament Arsenal have never won before. Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest have both been crowned kings of the continent in the past, whereas the Gunners never have.

Their failure to get their hands on the famous trophy harms Arsenal’s status on the European stage, especially as they have only ever reached one final. Mikel Arteta would become immortal if he was to become Arsenal’s first Champions League-winning head coach.

Arteta’s team already have one foot in the quarters after that shellacking of PSV last time out. A 7-1 lead means Arsenal could play the kids on Wednesday and still advance to the last eight, where Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid awaits.

For a team that has struggled in attack of late, it was even more surprising that Arsenal scored so many goals in Eindhoven, notwithstanding PSV’s ropey form since the turn of the year.

“I really enjoyed the match, so thank you to the players for the performance,” Arteta said after the first leg. “In the manner we’ve done it, the way we played and the goals we scored, it was a special night.”

Arsenal vs PSV betting tips

PSV need a miracle as they head to the Emirates Stadium with a 7-1 aggregate deficit to overturn.

Arsenal -1.5 Asian handicap

PSV must wish 2024 could have continued a bit longer.

Before the turn of the year, they had won 15 of their 17 Eredivisie matches. Since the calendar changed, they have triumphed just twice in eight attempts in the Dutch top tier.

Peter Bosz’s boys did beat Juventus in the Champions League play-offs last month, but any European optimism was extinguished with that stunning collapse against Arsenal.

It is hard to see how PSV can get themselves up for a second leg in which even a 5-0 win would see them eliminated. Their full focus is now on the Eredivisie title race, even though it will be tough to overturn an eight-point deficit to Ajax.

The most probable outcome is another comfortable, if less emphatic, Arsenal success.

⚽ Back Arsenal with a -1.5 Asian handicap at 11/10 with bet365 ⚽

Arsenal to score in both halves

Bosz has always been an attack-minded coach and his PSV team have been fantastic to watch throughout his tenure.

But while they are capable of blowing opponents away with their risk-taking, front-footed approach, PSV are at times liable to be thrashed themselves.

It is not really in this team’s nature to sit back and shut up shop, which is why Wednesday’s second leg looks dangerous for the Dutch outfit.

Arsenal have found it difficult to break down low blocks for much of the campaign, yet they showed last week that they have PSV’s number.

The Gunners are capable of finding the back of the net either side of the interval in this one.

⚽ Tip Arsenal to score in both halves at 6/5 with bet365 ⚽

Gabriel Martinelli to score or assist – 10/11

After several weeks on the treatment table, Gabriel Martinelli made his return against Manchester United on Sunday.

After getting through 32 second-half minutes unscathed, the Brazilian should feature more prominently against PSV.

Martinelli needs to build up his match fitness and this is a good opportunity for him to do just that ahead of this weekend’s clash with Chelsea.

Up against a PSV defence that has been leaking goals left, right and centre recently, Martinelli is likely to make an impact.

Arsenal are glad to have him back and the 23-year-old forward can show why here as Arteta’s team seek to book a quarter-final spot in style.

⚽ Choose Gabriel Martinelli to score or assist at 10/11 with bet365 ⚽
