Uganda’s Women’s National Basketball Team, Gazelles, secured a commanding 83-69 victory over South Sudan at the ongoing FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Qualifiers on Wednesday.
In the game played at Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall, the Gazelles started strong, taking an early 10-point lead (27-17) by the end of the first quarter. Shakirah Nanvubya and Paige Robinson led Uganda’s first-quarter effort, scoring 8 and 5 points respectively.
The star of the game Jane Asinde who scored 8 first-quarter points added 7 in the second with Keren Becky Longom extending Uganda’s advantage to 19 points (50-31) with a layup at the halftime buzzer.
After the break, Uganda maintained their dominance, closing the third quarter with a 17-point cushion (68-51). Coach Nicholas Natuhereza’s team sealed the win comfortably, finishing with a 14-point margin.
Asinde led Uganda’s scoring with an impressive 28 points, while Nanvubya (14 points), Robinson (14 points), and Hope Akello (12 points) also contributed significantly.
Delicia Washington (24 points), Adut Bulgak (14 points), and Rose Macuei reached double figures for South Sudan.
Uganda returns to action on Thursday, February 6, to face Burundi while South Sudan will take on Egypt.
The Gazelles must finish in the top two to advance to the final where they will compete for a spot at the continental tournament.
