Aston Villa suffered their first defeat in five matches on Tuesday night as they fell to a 4-1 defeat against Crystal Palace in the capital, which has seen Unai Emery’s side drop down to 10th in the Premier League table.
The Villans are only a couple of points off the top six in the league though as they chase European football for a third consecutive season, though they have played a game more than all of the teams around them in the table.
The West Midlands side will be keen to return to their home stadium on Friday night, where they haven’t lost in any competition since the end of October, a run spanning 14 matches, and have only lost one of their last 21 in the Second City.
Cardiff make the trip to Villa Park unbeaten in their last three matches, leaving the Bluebirds slowly pulling away from the relegation battle they’d spent much of the season competing in.
Omer Riza’s side’s 1-0 win over fellow relegation battlers Hull on Wednesday night lifted them six points clear of the bottom three into 19th place.
The Welsh side have struggled on the road this season, winning only one of their 17 matches away from home in the league, yet both of their FA Cup victories have come on their travels, knocking out Sheffield United and Stoke.
The Bluebirds’ only game against Premier League opposition this season ended in 5-3 defeat at home against Southampton.
Cardiff have won two of their last three matches against Aston Villa ahead of Friday night’s match, though were on the losing side the last time they met in the Championship back in 2018.
However Cardiff haven’t beaten the Villans away from in 70 years, winless on their last 15 trips to Villa Park, of which they’ve lost 13.
