Aston Villa v Crystal Palace predictions

Aston Villa’s draw with Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon extended their current unbeaten streak to 11 matches in all competitions, though they will be eager to get back to winning ways after conceding a 96th minute eqaliser.

Those two dropped points saw them lose ground on the top of the table, with the Villans now five points off the summit in fourth place, and now only two points above seventh placed Nottingham Forest in a very close fought battle for the Champions League places.

Unai Emery’s side have lost only match in all competitions all season and will be looking to reach the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup for just the second time in 12 years, and reached this fourth round stage by earning a 2-1 away win at League One side Wycombe in round three.

Only three teams have won this competition on more occasions than Villa’s five, though the West Midlands side haven’t lifted the trophy since 1996, though did reach the final in 2020.

They take on a Crystal Palace side fresh from earning their first Premier League win of the season on Sunday afternoon with a well earned 1-0 victory over Tottenham in a London derby to lift them out of the relegation zone.

Oliver Glasner’s side are now 17th in the table following Sunday’s win, two points clear of the bottom three and will be looking to spark a winning run to help them climb up the table and deep into the Carabao Cup, starting on Wednesday night at Villa Park.

The Eagles have only reached the last eight of this competition once in the last 21 years, which came in a run to the semi finals back in 2012.

The south London side have seen off Championship opposition in both of their matches to reach the fourth round, beating Norwich and QPR ahead of their trip to Birmingham on Wednesday night.

The last four meetings between the two teams have been won by the home side on each occasion, most recently coming on the final day of last season when Palace swept Villa aside 5-0, and the Eagles will be hoping for a similar score line this time around.

Aston Villa v Crystal Palace betting tips

Aston Villa will no doubt be seeing Wednesday’s match as an opportunity to rest some legs after playing two games for a week for most of the season due to their participation in the Champions League this season.

Jhon Duran is Villa’s top goal scorer this season with seven goals to his name despite having only started one league game, one Champions League game and a Carabao Cup game all season, and will likely be given a chance from the start this week having started on the bench on Saturday.

Crystal Palace have notably named near full-strength starting XIs in each of their Carabao Cup matches so far, implying Glasner and co are taking this competition seriously and we can expect another strong line up from them on Wednesday.

The Eagles boss will also be eager to follow up their win on the weekend with another as soon as possible having gone eight league matches without a victory to start the season, and Wednesday could be a big opportunity for victory against a likely weakened Villa side.
