Aston Villa vs Chelsea predictions

For the fourth time in their last five Premier League games, Aston Villa were involved in a draw on Wednesday.

Liverpool were their opponents this time and, by the end, Villa were pretty content to collect a point. On the balance of chances created, Liverpool were the better team. But the visitors’ profligacy proved costly, allowing Villa to avoid defeat in front of their own supporters.

Unai Emery’s side had their moments too. They could easily have nicked a victory late on, with Donyell Malen firing just wide of the post in second-half stoppage time.

Villa’s high line was exploited by Liverpool on occasion, while the hosts were also sloppy with some of their build-up play, but they looked dangerous going forward.

“We wanted to win and the most important thing was we showed until the last minute how we were pushing, how we were attacking, trying to get a third goal,” Emery said of his team’s showing in a game that was brought forward from March 16 due to Liverpool’s participation in the EFL Cup final that day.

“We keep going, our focus now is Saturday against Chelsea. At home, we’ve only lost one match against Arsenal in the Premier League. But we’re drawing a lot of matches and we have to try and get three points.

He is not wrong. Villa have now drawn nine games this term; only Brighton & Hove Albion have tied more matches. Emery’s team are four points adrift of fifth place, which will almost certainly be sufficient for Champions League qualification this season. Had they turned just three of those draws into wins, Villa would be fourth right now.

This is an important game for both teams. Chelsea are also targeting a top-five finish, but their recent results have been poor.

In the last two months, only six teams have collected fewer points than Enzo Maresca’s men. Even relegation candidates Wolverhampton Wanderers have a better record than Chelsea in that time.

The Blues were especially poor in a 3-0 loss to Brighton last time out. It was a worryingly limp display. Chelsea had 70 percent possession but Brighton had all the ideas. Maresca’s team did not even manage a single shot on target.

There is room for improvement for both teams, then, as Villa get set to host Chelsea this weekend.

Aston Villa vs Chelsea betting tips

Who will come out on top when Aston Villa do battle with Chelsea this weekend?

Aston Villa to win

As Emery pointed out after the draw with Liverpool, Aston Villa have lost just one home game this Premier League season.

Only Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City have collected more points in front of their own fans than Villa, whose home form will go a long way to determining whether or not they ultimately qualify for the Champions League.

As for Chelsea, they have really struggled on the road recently. You have to go back more than two months to find the last time Maresca’s charges were victorious in a domestic encounter at an opposition stadium.

Villa are suffering from several defensive injuries, so they will not be at full strength on Sunday afternoon.

Even so, they should have too much for a Chelsea team that has collected just two points from the last 15 available on rival soil.

Aston Villa to score last

Chelsea have many problems to deal with right now. One of them is an alarming tendency to drop off as games wear on.

It happened against Brighton last weekend. Chelsea were ineffectual in the first half but they only got worse as time ticked away.

We saw something similar in a recent trip to Manchester City and in a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace at the start of 2025.

In fact, Chelsea have now conceded the last goal in six of their last seven top-flight away matches. The exception was against Southampton, who look like one of the worst teams in Premier League history.

With the home fans behind them, Villa will keep pushing until the end. Recent evidence suggests Chelsea will struggle to withstand the pressure.

Morgan Rogers to score or assist

Morgan Rogers has only been an Aston Villa player for just over a year, but it feels like he has been part of Emery’s team for longer.

That underlines his importance to the cause. Rogers is enjoying a fantastic season. He has had a direct hand in 17 goals in all competitions, either by scoring or assisting. Ollie Watkins is the only Villa player to have been involved in more.

Rogers is an elite ball-carrier and he also has a knack for finding pockets of space even in crowded areas.

Chelsea have looked very unconvincingly defensively of late, and Rogers has what it takes to exploit any deficiencies on Sunday.
